I'll admit the equatorial ridge is interesting, but if it
were a huge spacecraft made out of metal, it would probably
have many flat bits. These flat bits -- not unlike windows
in Terrestrial skyscrapers -- would show many reflection
anomalies to a passing observer which happens to be in
exactly the right place.
The effect is vaguely similar to that observed by those
of us lucky enough to fly over cities in Earth aircraft
at certain times of the day.
It's still a very weird moon, though.

That would be the same Carl Sagan who doesn't mention Hoagland a single
time in any of his books that I have on my shelf.
The same Sagan who spent his entire life fighting the kind of
pseudo-scientific pap that Hoagland and his ilk spouts.
The same Sagan who devoted an entire chapter of "The Demon-Haunted

I wonder if Sagan thought of Hoagie more as an annoying wannabe

The same Sagan who spent his entire life fighting the kind of
pseudo-scientific pap that Hoagland and his ilk spouts.

The same Sagan who devoted an entire chapter of "The Demon-Haunted
World" to trashing the face on Mars and the rest of the book trashing
other pseudo-scientific silliness.

I wonder if Sagan thought of Hoagie more as an annoying wannabe
scientist - a hanger-on that he couldn't shake.

Anyhoo, I wonder if he'll be calling Phil Plait his "mutual friend and
colleague" soon!

That's the one, yes!
Does anyone know if there's any actual proof that Sagan would have
known who Hoagie even is, or that they ever met?

Two best lines:

" my long-time friend, Arthur C. Clarke"

and

"our mutual friend and colleague, the late Carl Sagan"

As if either one of those guys would have given Hoagy the time of day.

"My God... It's full of DOTS!"

He might have bumped into him at a conference, literally. That's
all I would guess ever happened. I doubt he knew Hoagland
existed.
