Physics and fame |
Ref: http://www.physicsweb.org/article/news/8/4/12
Fame in science is different to fame in other areas of life according
to physicists at Clarkson University in the US. Daniel ben-Avraham
and colleagues have shown that the fame of a scientist - as measured
by the number of hits on Google - is directly proportional to their
merit as measured by the number of research papers they have
published. Such a relationship is not found for other groups such as
sportsmen or actors (J P Bagrow et al. 2004 arXiv/cond-mat/0404515).
The Clarkson team says that the research could shed new light on the
science of networks and help researchers working in social sciences
and psychology.

You know ... that result could have been stated without the two
intermediate renamings: number of hits on Google is correlated to the
number of pulished papers. Calling the first item "fame" and the
second "merit" is tendentious.
Such a relationship is not found for other groups such as
sportsmen or actors (J P Bagrow et al. 2004 arXiv/cond-mat/0404515).
Which begs the question of what parallels a "paper" for a sportsman or
actor? For the latter I would have thought "roles", and I find it
unlikely that fame (as measured, of course, by number of hits on
Google) would not show a strong positive correlation to the number of
roles the actor has appeared in in professional productions (research
papers).
The Clarkson team says that the research could shed new light on the
science of networks and help researchers working in social sciences
and psychology.

Does this article say anything about the big money scientists are racking
in by perpetuating the stories that the speed of light is a limit, free
energy isn't, Einstein was right, etc.?
Any free thinker knows that it is all a conspiracy by every scientist,
every school, every book publisher and every government on the planet.
