Physics paper 'typo' upsets many

Class XII board examinations began on an unusual note.
Blame it on the printer's devil, but a typographical
error is all set to mar prospects of many examinees. Two
missing letters from a technical word in the Physics
paper could see students losing up to five percent in the
subject.
Question number 19 of set one and 20 of the third set of
the Physics paper stated, "ultraviolet light of
wavelength 2271 Angstrom from a 100 W mercury source
'radiates' a photo cell made of molybdenum metal".
Teachers said that the word "radiates" should have
actually been "irradiates" to be technically correct.
"The ultraviolet light is already being radiated by the
mercury source, so it has to fall on the photo cell and
this process of fall is called irradiation," said Kiran J
Nayak, a physics teacher in Apeejay School, Pitampura.
She further explained, "To radiate is to emit rays and
therefore an ultraviolet light cannot radiate photo
cells, rather it has to fall on it."
The teachers also said that being a device, photo cell
cannot be emitted out of light. "Photo cell is a device,
so it cannot be emitted out of light. If the word
'radiates' is to be maintained in the question, photo
cells should have been replaced by photo electrons," said
Aparna Krishnan, another subject teacher at Apeejay
School, Sheikh Sarai.
A Delhi University (DU) physics expert, too, confirmed
the mistake in this three mark question. "The ultraviolet
light has already been emitted out of the light and so it
has to fall on the photo cells and more specifically, it
has to irradiate the cells," said the senior teacher who
teaches in DU's physics department.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) however
refuse to admit such a mistake. "The question paper was
absolutely flawless as our subject experts have gone
through it thoroughly. And a well read student should not
have any problem in understanding it," said Pavnesh
Kumar, the controller of examinations, CBSE.
Nevertheless, aggrieved students did not buy such
comments. "The numerical was very easy to solve but the
particular sentence stating ultraviolet light radiates
photo cells confused me. Even though I was aware of the
answer, I got perplexed with that particular word
'radiate'," said a distressed Vipual Jay, a student of
Guru Harkishan Singh Public School (GHSPS).
Lengthy derivations and numericals, in addition
aggravated the disappointment of the students as a
majority of them had no option but to submit an
incomplete paper.
"Despite being an easy paper, it was very lengthy and
time consuming. Those derivations generally marked for
five were allotted only three marks. We cannot leave the
formulae half derived as less marks were being allotted,
so we had a tough time completing the paper," complained
Priyanka Mishra.
In contrast, the Class X examinations passed off without
any hassle.
