Popular Mechanic's Hafnium Reaction |
Does anybody know the real story. It is a likely real reaction,
but it is not discussed here?
If it is real, like the oscillating deuterium-paladium batteries, we
have a fairly interesting situation in physics.
Why can't it be called, "for real" and then everybody could get
excited about revolutionary physics?

Some fool built a plane wihout any fuel and just installed the controle
rods instead.
Of corse the damb thing wount fly , fuel rods burn but controle rods
don't react .
I wounder then =BF who built a plane with rods biult not to react ?
Controle rod ( hafnium ) will not react so how will they get a reaction
from controle rods allone without any fuel ?

If the photon has more energy than the mass defect of the nucleus, it can
burst the nucleus asunder. If it has less energy, but still sufficient
energy, it can excite the nucleus just as visible light can excite the
electrons in an atom. The photon does not need mass to do that. The
photon has its own momentum proportional to its energy, but this is not a
recoil process, so the momentum isn't important.
Google on "nuclear photodissociation".
A nuclear isomer is a nucleus that is in an excited state, and that's what
the Popular Mechanics article was talking about. When it decays to its
ground state it will emit a gamma ray with some energy. If a gamma ray of
that same energy hit the nucleus in its ground state, it can reverse the
process and excite it. Hafnium-178* (the star * means it's in an excited
state) is interesting because of a half-life of around 30 years, compared
with less than one second for most other isomers. The idea was that
relatively low energy x-rays could cause the nucleus to drop to the ground
state, very much like the stimulated emission from an atom in a laser.
In fact, there had been defense research into a gamma ray laser based on that
concept.
The reality is that the stimulated emission may work and be of scientific
interest, but the efficiency would be so poor that it would not be of any
practical interest.

not a recoil process analogous to a bug derailing a train. You're still
free to do the Google search I'd recommended and read about actual,
experimental data concerning nuclear photodissociation. Then you'll tell
the researchers that they didn't see what they saw because bugs don't
derail trains?

A photon wount get past the electron and ever hit the nutron .
If it did , the largest photon is 1 millionth the energy of a nutron
in motion.

Come up to the bat and compar the two.
1,, a nutron shot out of another atom wount knock the one out of the
controle rod so what on earth makes you think 1 millionth the energ of
the nurton will knock it out then ?
