Object: Proposal for a new newsgroup - alt.usenet.bigots
The definition of "bigot" is:
"A prejudiced person who is intolerant of any opinions differing from his
own."
I suggest that there should be a moderated newsgroup for the bigots,
called alt.usenet.bigots.
As bigots have no newsgroup of their own,
they end up in various newsgroups,
and try to suppress the opinions of other folks,
by attacking them personally,
dismissing their posts offhand,
posting useless references with no comments
on how the references apply to the issue in play,
telling their victim to read a particular book
or take certain classes in school,
nominating them for stupid awards,
setting up personal web attack sites
to attack the folks with different opinions,
suggesting that others should "killfile"
the folks whose opinions they want to suppress, etc. etc...
One newsgroups called alt.Usenet.bigots
should handle most of the bigots,
as most bigots share the same opinions,
about race, religion, physics models,
the language a model MUST be expressed in,
who to drop nuclear bombs on, etc.,
and most bigots even use the same boilerplate and methods.
If bigots had a moderated newsgroup
where they could post and read
sharply filtered opinions that cater to their bigotry,
they would be happy, and not feel compelled to
attack the folks who operate with a broader bandpass.
One side advantage of such a newsgroup
would be that as there would be a lot of
shrill, monochromatic, coherent, energy involved,
maybe the energy could be beamed to supply power
to a Moon base.

Actually in my experience ALL moderated groups are bigot groups. Not
being exposed to ideas "outside your fence" is what makes many people
comfy. Hence the moderated groups. Just think of it as the Internet
version of "peer review"! I find it amazing that so many people have a
problem with free speech even when such includes nutcases who imagine
internet posting to be a cure for mental illness or the wildly
illogical such as those in power with an agenda to preserve that
power.

One side advantage of such a newsgroup
would be that as there would be a lot of

Doubtful. Monochromatic, yes. Coherent, NO! And as for enough
decreasing entropy to do any useful work....fergeddaboutit.
The problem with bigotry in science is that science has in many areas
(especially those where hard data is from slim to none) become
religion. The religion of physics, like say the religion of politics,
is that "WE" are always "right" and "THEY" are always 'wrong" by
definition. This attitude doesn't allow for any new ideas to enter.
New ideas do occur, but usually they seem to come from BEHIND the
scenes mysteriously generated by hidden forces. If you don't believe
it just look closely at U.S. politics or cosmology.

I agree with Benji, if the new idea is within the realm of the existing
"scientific religion", it will be all right. it will be taken in. but if the
new idea is totally throwing everybody else in the field out, while still
being correct, it won't have chance to enter the arena. Bigotry is a
psychotic form of ignorance.
