See "Dual coding theory," WIkipedia, for a clear introduction to Alan
Paivio's (U. Western Ontario) Dual Coding Theory of visual vs sound or
verbal processing in the brain/mind.
Some good references there are:
1) Anderson, J. R. (2005) Cognitive Psychology and Its Implications.
Worth: N.Y.
2) Anderson, J. R., and Bower, G. H. (1973), Human Assoiative Memory.
Winston: Washington, D.C.
3) Baddeley, A. D. (1986). Working Memory. Oxford U. Press: Oxford,
U.K.
4) Paivio, A. (1986). Mental Representations: a Dual Coding
Approach. Oxford U. Press, Oxford, U.K.
Baddeley's "Working Memory" includes visuospatial sketchpad vs
phonological loops which map to Paivio's theory.
There are some indications tha verbal information is superior to
visual information when sequential order is required for a memory
task.
