R. da Rocha and Jaime Vaz Jr., of Unicamp, Campinas Brazi, in "On
Clfiford subalgebras, spacetime splittings, and applications," arXiv:
math-ph/0605009 v1 3 May 2006, 22 pages, show that the Dirac spinor
field is a direct sum of 2 quaternions, among other things. Vaz
and Rocha are about tied in number of papers in arXiv (13 and 14
respectively), although they haven't appeared in arXiv since 2006.
The paper of Rocha and Vaz is an embodiment of careful, detailed, step
by step mathematics in the old school tradition, but motivated largely
by physics applications. It is almost entirely reducible to
equations, of which there are at least 106 numbered equations (I
didn't count the last few). Einstein would have liked it. Edward
Witten and John Schwarz would have probably missed the lack of hidden
assumptions, while Smolin and Ashtekar and Rovelli would have probably
missed the lack of hidden divisions (I almost typed demolitions, not
quite so far off).
Of course, from the viewpoint of Probable Influence/Causation (PI),
which uses addition/subtraction and constant multiplication but only
rarely multiplication of variables, the paper of Rocha and Raz comes
up with excellent results.
