From Osher Doctorow

T. Padmanabhan of IUCAA Pune University India has 112 papers in arXiv,
8 papers in the last 12 months, many papers emphasizing Holography and
gravity and the vacuum.
One of his very interesting papers is "Why does gravity ignore the
vacuum energy?" arXiv: gr-qc/0609012 v2 17 oct 2006, 28 pages. He
modifies/generalizes the Einstein Field Equation to an equivalent form
with the Cosmological Constant but not for example as a coupling
constant in the Lagrangian of the theory but rather as a constant of
integration somewhat like mass in the Schwarzschild metric, the value
of which can be chosen dependent on physical context.
Padmanabhan in this paper gives considerable explanation and reasons
for why the boundary or surface rather than volume or bulk is of
critical importance, including some deep invariances under
transformations.
Spacetime emerges as something analogous to an elastic solid with
equations describing its dynamics similar o those of elasticity in a
type of Sakharov/Zakharov paradigm.
