From Osher Doctorow
A slight digression from Quantum Gravity is again in order, this time
to notice a relatively new theory of GUT replacing orbifolds by an
interval which is more in the spirit of Probable Causation/Influence
(PI) although the latter can incorporate other domains.
Naoyuki Haba, who has 58 papers in arXiv from 1993 through 2008, and
Yutaka Sakamura and Toshifumi Yamashita of Osaka U (I've given up
looking up the number of papers of all authors due to laziness and
also because arXiv throws me off for over-accessing papers), in "iGUT
- Grand Unified Theory on interval," arXiv: 0801.2635 v1 [hep-ph] 17
Jan 2008, 34 pages, construct 5D GUTs on an interval, called iGUTs,
with SUSY SO(10) iGUT as an example. Orbifolds don't allow rank
reduction of SO(10) to SM (Standard Model) gauge symmetry through
(interval) boundary conditions.
A section on warped backgrounds including Randall-Sundrum is also
included in the paper.
I'll let Readers read this paper before continuing. The paper is
usefully scanned by reading the introduction, abstract, and summary/
conclusion where the latter has a very remarkable collection of tables
which are "gems", and also read Appendix B and look up referenced
terms in the text on first reading.
