From Osher Doctorow

Let's look at a determinant as a finite alternating series:
1) Det(M) = a1 - a2 + ... +/- an
where ai are nonnegative, i = 1 to n, and M is a square n x n matrix.
Let's normalize everything into the interval [0, 1], so all the ai are
in this interval.
Now take a look at this:
2) 1 + y - (x - z) = 1 + y - x + z
Identifying x, y, and set with sets they represent in P' (A-->B), etc.,
for example x = P(A), y = P(B), z = P(C), we can write (2) as:
3) 1 + y - (x - z) = 1 + y - [(z-->x) - 1]
where (z-->x) is used for P' (C-->A) = 1 + x - z. Notice, however,
that (3) means that the alternating series terms of (2) aren't
"equivalent" in (Probable) Causation because z is "Causing x" which
"Causes y".
So we can regard determinants as embodying hierarchies of (Probable)
Causation when normalized under these conditions, generalizing to n
variables.

I wrote the determinant of the n x n matrix as the sum of n alternating
terms, but it should actually be (n + 1)! alternating terms where (n +
1)! = 1 times 2 times 3 times ... times n + 1. Proof by mathematical
induction.

I meant to type n! terms, not (n+1)! terms in the previous posting.

I think he is doing quite well.
Just think of it, combining Quantum Gravity, Expansion-Contraction,
Determinants, and PI into one posting!
Could you do that?

Remember the one about the glass being half full or half empty?
Actually, though, this itself could be an interesting research topic.
In addition to the glass half full or half empty scenario, one could
have other scenarios:
1. Lincoln's Gettysburg Address (met with stunned silence) as opposed
to canned applause or laughs on TV
2. The Athenian response to Socrates' wisdom (poisoning) as opposed to
crowds' Beatle hysteria in the 60s USA & U.K.
3. The science fiction story about the guy who travelled into the
future and returned quite upset but refused to say why, as opposed to a
typical politicians' promises that never come to pass.
4. The ultimate consequence of "Unto Thyself Be True" (write for
yourself and nobody else) as opposed to the typical level of grovelling
Nobel Prize Literature or Pulitzer Prize awardees.
5. Comedian Red Skelton's remark: "My best times occurred when nothing
was said," as opposed to Rap/Babble/Disc Jockeys.
6. The Karate Kid's Motto: Talk is cheap, action is Rare.
7. The Ultimate Triumph of "Speak only when spoken to."
8. The "Turnaround" Interpretation: I have inspired others to start
their own threads not necessarily related to mine.
