Lt. Army Gen. H. Steven Blum made the remarks while speaking to the
NAACPs Annual Armed Services and Veterans Affairs Awards Dinner in
Washington, DC on July 18. The story, including quotes from Blum's
talk, was reported in an American Forces Press Service dispatch.
According to writer Rudi Williams:
"As for the military's diversity, Blum said, the battlefield might be
the greatest equalizer. 'Agnostics, atheists and bigots suddenly lose
all that when their life is on the line,' Blum said. 'Something that
they lived with their whole life believing gets thrown out the door, and
they grasp the comrade next them, and they don't care what color their
skin is, and they don't care where they pray...' "

Ooooh! Never thought i'd say this to *MIN*, but... thanks for the
tip-off. I think some communication with the National Guard Bureau is
in order here, and _perhaps_ with the NAACP (which claims to represent
me) after i learn their reaction to someone speaking against bigotry
showing his own bigotry against 25,000,000 Americans.
Of course, Min's subject line is wrong. Per the 1st Amendment, the
National Guard is not authorized to send anyone to Min's hell. Plus,
even if Lt. Gen. Blum was speaking only for himself, i didn't read
where he sent anyone anywhere. Maybe if i get the whole transcript...
While i was in college, people of Min's ilk lumped me with the
communists _solely_ because i was not a Republican. For a few years
more, the _communists_ assumed i was a fellow communist for the sole
reason that i _happened_ to agree with them that my tax dollars should
not have gone to killing people in Central America. And then people
presumed to lump me with the Fidel-Castrophiles, the Puerto Rican
independistas, the abortion rights movement, the anti-Israel movement,
and the militant vegetarians, based _solely_ on my position on Central
America. I was even once assigned membership in the Virgin Islands
independence movement _solely_ because i grew up there.
Last year in sci.astro.amateur, i found myself, as well as all other
atheists, lumped with the communists. That i can _almost_ comprehend,
as McCarthyist lies die hard. But now i'm lumped with the *bigots*???
By a bigot speaking out against bigotry? Now that one came out of the
blue!
Hmmmm. I wonder what Lt. Gen. Blum thinks of Pat Tillman...?
