Length dilation is along the direction of
motion. An observer would see a foreshortened
wheel, apparently elliptical, with the height
remaining the same but the width contracted.

If the wheel were stationary its diameter would
be measured to be D = Circumference/pi = (1 mile)/pi.

The wheel is doing 0.5c linearly, so it's front to
back diameter (minor axis) is D*sqrt(1-v^2/c^2).
Its height remains unchanged.

Actually, upon further reflection I take this
back. The observer stationary in the frame of
the ground will see the top of the wheel moving
forward more quickly than the center, which
in turn will be moving more quickly than the
bottom which is instantaneously at rest where
it touches the ground. So the shape will be
more complex than a simple ellipse. More of
an ovoid I'd guess.
Relativistic velocity addition and length
contraction always applies, so it's possible to
work out the shape (and hence the circumference).
I'll have to give it a go.

You guess wrong still,
The wheel can do no such thing from speed alone.
please check my can rolling in the train thread.
(It causes a real problem with realtive motion of the can)

Forget this one just for a while,
and take on the can rolling on the train car thread.
That one will make your brain smoke!
and maybe even break some of the brainwashing
if you actually think about it.

The only problems are in your head.
Nevermind, someone's already done the math for the
relativistic wheel and made a graphic:

Check out the rolling wheels videos.

James, you're just becoming more and more pitiful.
Keep up the good work.

No problems in my head,
There is a brainwashin problem in your head though.
You do not even think about what you state anymore.
It is like a triggered response that dolphins can do
once brainwashed to do such.
LOL

LOL
It is easy to make such videos with 3D abstract *****.
I can make such a video that the wheel turns into a
big pile of ***** as it passes.
I use www.hash.com all the time to do silly things like that.
LOL
In short..
That reference is not worth *****.

Greg,
It is truly sad that all you have is "brainwashed" replies
and actually can not think for yourself anymore.
I truly feel sorry for you.
