London - The blazing heat generated during summer can be
stored and used to prevent roads from icing up in winter,
says a study.
The report says sunshine heats water pipes under the road
and this can be stored in ultra insulated tanks until
needed to combat frost, according to the online edition
of New Scientist.
Researchers buried a network of polyethylene water pipes
25 millimetres in diameter below a section of private
road in Britain.
The pipes were laid in rows about 15 cm apart and at a
depth of 12 cm, where the ground temperature is normally
about 12 deg C on average. In the summer this can rise
to 25 deg C.
All well and good where winter ground temperatures never get very
cold, but I doubt it would work in Minnesota.
