Eliminate flu shots, live with humility

In "Lives of elderly retain their value" (Letters, Oct. 2), Betty
Manning says the old-timer who wrote about foregoing a flu shot so a
younger person could have it was in error. She's right. The correct
policy is to stop making flu shots altogether.

Look at all the problems we have with a 6.5 billion population. What
will it be like with 9 or 10 billion? We don't have to live as many
years as possible, regardless of suffering or infirmity. We need to put
the greediness down, and pick up some humility.

-- David Polewka, Chapel Hill

A voice mail I received on October 9, when my letter was published:
"Hi, this is Peg Parker,...in Chapel Hill. I would just like
to thank you for your letter to the editor in this morning's
paper, about the flu vaccine, because I couldn't agree
with you more, in your sentiments, and I'm delighted to
have them expressed publicly. Thank you very much. Bye."

Member Profile: Peg Parker
For more than 40 years, Peg Parker of Chapel Hill, North Carolina,
has been humbly doing her part to work for a better future. As the
former chair of her local board of elections, and in her current roles
as precinct judge and chair of the elections committee, she has been
involved with voter registration and the electoral process for much of
her career. The retired second-grade teacher also stays active in the
community by serving on the local Planned Parenthood Board, helping
with a therapeutic equestrian program, and volunteering with the
Triangle Land Conservancy.
In 1979, as a young mother of two children, Peg was concerned about
the bleak future her son and daughter might face under the threat of
nuclear war. She joined UCS because it offered her a way to align
with professionals who not only conduct quality research and analysis,
but also have the ability to apply it to policy development. "UCS has
developed a win-win approach, " Peg explains, "that involves working
together with corporations, federal and state policy makers, and
citizens to craft practical solutions that make our lives better."
Some of the issues that concern Peg (and on which UCS works to
develop solutions) include energy use, air pollution, and nuclear
weapons proliferation. "I support UCS because it gives me hope," she
adds. A member of our Living Legacy Society, Peg decided to include
UCS in her estate plans several years ago. She also participates in our
monthly giving program, Partners for the Earth, and is recognized in
our Henry Kendall Society for her leadership giving.

You can have my flu shot when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers.
Isn't it funny that industries that SAVE lives, like vaccine companies,
come under such flack, while Big Tobacco and Charleton Heston, Inc.,
keeps churning right along ...

Katrina damage blamed on wetlands loss
By Tim Hirsch
BBC Environment correspondent in the Mississippi Delta
Two months after Hurricane Katrina slammed into the coast of

attributed to the disappearance of the region's swamps and marshes.

blame it on the people who BUY the cigarettes. don't blame the
companies -- they are just producing whatever the customers want to
buy.
why don't you want to buy more flu shots at $50 a pop?

magic math tricks gives us a false either or proposition. You can't
hold companies responsible for knowingly inflicting harm because it was
the customers fault. I would like to sell him/her a device to
introduce radon gas into the home. Can I do this?
