America must boost its investment in particle physics if it is to stay
at the forefront of the discipline. That is the conclusion of a National
Academy of Sciences panel charged with recommending priorities for US
particle physics over the next 15 years. The panel believes that the
"intellectual centre of gravity" within the field is moving abroad and
that, as things stand, within a few years most American experimental
particle physicists will be working at facilities overseas.

Will someone *please* tell me why we decommissioned the Superconducting
Supercollider again?
:-)
Especially since completing it then allowing it to sit there would have
been cheaper??
(Ye gods.)

bad marketing. just tell bush and his stupid evangelical stooges
that you need this machine to search for the "god particle"
(aka higgs boson) and you will get all the money you need.
don't laugh, i have seen stupid christians get all excited when
hearing physicists are close to discovering the "god particle".
stupid, scientifically illiterate douchebags...

I gathered that the then president was convinced by some ignorant
that continental US would be swallowed by a huge Black Hole if
the device was ever put into operation.
He then started shaking in his pants and immediately cancelled the
project.

That was Clinton. I doubt if he was even paying attention other than to
just try to reduce the deficit.

He then started shaking in his pants and immediately cancelled the
project.

Nah, he was too busy with interns shaking what was in his pants to pay
attention. LOL! But he did manage to reduce the deficit during his
term which the Bush-man promptly ruined during his term. If Republicans
are supposed to be conservative, why does the deficit always go up
during their terms? I just don't get it.

Since I love HEP, it is too too bad about the Super-collider. I cried
when they killed it back in '94. We probably would already know by now
that the Higgs mechanism is somewhat different than as currently
proposed. But yep, I think they should definitely start work on the new
linear collider right away. In fact, they should have started
yesterday. ;-)

Well, another theory of mine down drain!!
At least, I was on target with "something" shading in his pants. :-)
