Dear Sir,
Jo 's answer is typical of the present Geology as foraged in the mind
of the Geology students the world over, and expressed then by
established geologists & geology professor ( as Jo is indeed )
Besides the fact that I have the greatest consideration for our friend,
the real answer is completely different of what you may suspect.
First of all, Lake Tana gives birth to the Blue Nile and the main
feature of such lake is that NO river of importance is flowing into it
..=2E. do you have an idea where the water is coming from then ?
Secondly, as you have noted incidently, the witdth of the gorge is far
larger than the one of the Nile and this is a specific feature of all
main gorges & falls in the world ( Niagara, Victoria, Iguazu falls etc
) . Indeed the reason for a fall, a thing completely overlooked in the
University training of the mass produced rock surveyors, is the
SURRECTION of the water basin !!! A gorge is created indeed with ALL
THE RIVER WATER BASIN since without a water basin there is no river !
Okay ?
HENCE the length of the gorge? with a rule of thumb estimate,
considering present weathering conditions by the such river, gives an
estimate within a few millenium of the time when such SURRECTION TOOK
PLACE !
( for the Niagara falls which of all was the most surveyed, the
estimate for the creation of the present gorge is a mere 10 000 years
-+ 2000 years )
With kind regards
