1) One GPS satellite puts you on the surface of a sphere.
2) Two GPS satellites intersect two spheres - puts you on a circle.
3) Three GPS satellites locate you at two points on a circle - one
of which is trivially wrong.
4) Four GPS satellites define a unique point in 3-space.

You've made this same blunder before...almost TWO YEARS ago. See:
http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=3DE4ECAF.F95D317A%40hate.spam.net

You accuse others of being stoopid. Try learning some humility, for once.

You are wrong. Talk with GPS vendors.

Al, overall your -scientific- contributions to this newsgroup are
quite positive. I respect you for that.
However, you also use this newsgroup to feed a rather enormous ego.
You constantly belittle minority groups and those whom you consider
intellectual inferiors. I do -not- respect you for that.

On the "GPS ques" thread, I presented a scenario for you, which I
quote for you with the addition of one line which I indicate with a
"-" rather than a ">"

An atomic clock controls a huge billboard display exhibiting the
following:
Latitude: 34 degrees 5 minutes 29.3504 seconds North
Longitude: 118 degrees 22 minutes 16.4312 seconds West

- Altitude: 34 meters above sea level

Date/Time: September 10, 2004 / 05:24:13.0143451222
You are observing the sign with a large telescope from far away. In
your hand is a quartz watch that has not been set particularly
accurately.
You stated, "One GPS satellite puts you on the surface of a sphere."
OK, that implies that there is enough information in the scenario I
presented to determine your distance from the billboard.
Show me the calculations, Al. Or admit your mistake.

As I have stated before, being able to admit mistakes is one of the
factors distinguishing legitimate contributors in these newsgroups
from crackpots. I have never quite figured out on which side of the
fence you stand. Your feet straddle the fence quite widely.
Regardless of your response/nonresponse to me, best wishes on your
parity Eotvos experiment.

(((Egos)))
If you are really interested in GPS, go get the series of books on it by the
Gov, low cost, there are 4, very rich, with all the math too. Ionspeheric
distortion, and so on 6 to 12 satellites are best for accuracy, and most
GPS receivers have that.
You can do location using Only two sattilites too - like Qualcom does, been
in business for 10+ years.

Chicken or the egg? From what I can tell Al's ego is well deserved and earned,
and the fact that he feeds it is a byproduct of the help he offers to people
asking questions.

Yes, Al is quite intelligent, and he occasionally does offer help to people
asking questions. But more often, he responds with uncalled-for abusive
remarks.
Al is quite racist. I happen to be a member of what (in the USA) is a
minority group, and I am married to a member of a different minority group,
and my sister is married to a member of a minority group which is a prime
target of Al's race hatred.
I respect Al's scientific achievements, and I wish him all the best in his
parity Eotvos experiment.
But I do not respect him on a personal level. I don't dislike him. Actually,
I feel sorry for him.

It's not abuse if the people beg for it.. which they do with the stuff they
post. If they can abuse the physics forum then Al can "abuse" them.

Yes, it is always very amusing to see Al tear into an idiot.
But what set me off on this apparently quixotic campaign was seeing Al
insult a person who had corrected Al on a fundamental point of
understanding:
http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=413E3E4F.EAC18A72%40hate.spam.net
Basically, Al owes John an apology, because Al was wrong and John was right.
However, to judge from Al's few responses to me, I do not see that apology
as ever being forthcoming.

What is wrong up there?
(Do not talk to GPS vendors, they don't know anything,
they are salesmen).
So, what is wrong with U.Al's explanation?
I have no clue.

I have no clue.

As both Bruce Bowen and Robert Egri have correctly pointed out on the "GPS
ques" thread, GPS receivers possess high quality voltage controlled crystal
oscillators that are phase locked to the GPS signal.
Bruce's comments:
http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=b824a8a0.0409080831.24a9ac97%40posting.google.com
(Robert's comments haven't yet turned up on Google Groups, so I can't yet
provide a link)
So you effectively have a timepiece which is regulated to atomic clock
precision. However, precision is not accuracy. If all you receive is ONE
single satellite signal, you have no idea (to within 0.02 seconds, anyway)
what the actual time may be. It is only with -accurate- time that you can
state how far you are from the satellite.
Note 1: The only reason why you know the time to within 0.02 seconds, is
that you know that you are limited to the surface of the Earth, and you know
the GPS satellite is above the horizon. In the hypothetical case where you
are floating in space receiving a GPS signal from a single satellite, you
could be anywhere in the universe.
Note 2: OK, quibble, quibble. The first experimental GPS satellite was
launched in 1974, so that limits you to a 30 light year radius...
:-)
Whatever. Contrary to Uncle Al's statement, one GPS satellite does -not- put
you on the surface of a sphere.
