Object: Resonance Particles
I can remember back to the 1970s when there were over 200 "elementary"
particles. Most were known as "resonance particles" and had very short
lifetimes. How do thse fit into the quark scheme of things? eg. How can
a resonance particle with spin 9/2 be composed of three quarks with
spin 1/2, where does the extra spin come from?
Has anyone has figured out why resonance particles have the masses they
have?
Are more resonance particles still being discovered? If not, why not?
Are there two classes of spin 3/2 baryons - those in the lowest energy
state and those that are resonances of spin 1/2 baryons?
How do multiplets work at spin 5/2 and above for baryons, spin 2 and
above for mesons?

This website probably answers my question as well as anything:
http://pdg.lbl.gov/2006/reviews/quarkmodrpp.pdf

How do these fit into the quark scheme of things?

See website.

How can a resonance particle with spin 9/2 be composed of three quarks with
spin 1/2, where does the extra spin come from?

Orbital angular momentum, there's a system S, P, D, F ... that looks
analogous to the orbital states of electrons around an atom.

Has anyone has figured out why resonance particles have the masses they
have?

Sort of. There are calculations, but they don't agree well with
observation.

Are more resonance particles still being discovered?

No.

If not, why not?

I don't know, why not?
