RSA Information Security Conference celebrates "Vedic Mathematics"
One of the most important information security
conferences is hosted by the information security company
RSA. World's leading infosec researchers attend this
conference and present papers. This year the conference
has picked as its theme "Vedic Mathematics" and
celebrates "a mathematical sage" named Aryabhatta. The
details of the conference theme is give at:
http://2006.rsaconference.com/us/conference/theme.aspx
As part of this conference, Dr. Subhash Kak (familiar to
this group as one of the leading opponent of "Aryan
Invasion/Migration" theory), Delaune Distinguished
Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at
Louisiana State University, will be giving a keynote
address entitled "Codes and Ciphers in Ancient India".
https://cm.rsaconference.com/US06/catalog/eventguide/publicSchedule.jsp
Conference agenda describes his accomplishments in the
field of cryptography. " A pioneering cryptographer who
has made fundamental contributions to speech scrambling,
theory of random sequences, and quantum cryptographic
codes, he has also researched the history of mathematics
and astronomy. He is the author of 15 books that include
"In Search of the Cradle of Civilization," "Computing
Science in Ancient India," The Astronomical Code of the
Rg veda," and the "The Architecture of Knowledge." The
conference agenda describes his talk as follows: Dr.
Subhash Kak traces cosmological ideas that led to
mathematical abstraction, the algorithmic structure of
Panini's grammar (450 BCE), the binary number system of
Pingala (400 BCE), and the mathematics of the astronomer
Aryabhata (500 CE). He describes two explicit ciphers,
one due to Aryabhata and the other due to Vararuchi, and
explains the pervasive nature of symbolic codes in Indian
art and architecture.
Since the keynote address is related to areas of interest
to this list, can anybody comment on "Vedic Mathematics"?
Sincerely,
Mani M. Manivannan

Conference Theme
Every year, the RSA Conference is built around a
different historical theme which highlights a significant
use, or misuse, of information security. In 2006, the
theme is centered on ancient Vedic mathematics, and a
mathematical Sage named Aryabhatta.
Modern Codes in Ancient Sutras
In 499 CE, in Kusumpura, capital of the Gupta Empire in
classical India, a young mathematician named Aryabhatta
published an astronomical treatise written in 118
Sanskrit verses. A student of the Vedic mathematics
tradition that had slowly emerged in India between 1500
and 900 BCE, Aryabhatta, only 23, intended merely to give
a summary of Vedic mathematics up to his time. But his
slender volume, the Aaryabhat.iiya, was to become one of
the most brilliant achievements in the history of
mathematics, with far-ranging implications in the East
and West.
Aryabhatta correctly determined the axial rotation of the
earth. He inferred that planetary orbits were elliptical,
and provided a valid explanation of solar and lunar
eclipses. His theory of the relativity of motion predated
Einstein's by 1400 years. And his studies in algebra and
trigonometry, which laid the foundations for calculus,
influenced European mathematicians 1,000 years later,
when his texts were translated into European languages
from 8th century Arabic translations of the Sanskrit
originals.
Today, the work of information security professionals
affects the global business community in ways as profound
and far-reaching as the seminal calculations of
Aryabhatta. Join us at the RSA Conference 2006 to
celebrate the mathematical achievements of ancient India,
and discover unprecedented approaches to securing your
business and applications.
