PS Rovelli's rough draft of his Quantum Gravity book is free at
http://www.cpt.univ-mrs.fr/~rovelli/book.pdf - See Ch 2.
The 4 tetrad 1-form "gravity fields" from locally gauging the T4 group
locally in the dynamical actions of all special relativistic quantum
field theories in accord with the equivalence principle are
e^a = I^a + A^a
I^a is the Einstein-Cartan tetrad for globally flat Minkowski space-time
where
I^a = Iu^adx^u
In an inertial frame globally flat geodesic representation
Iu^a ---> Kronecker delta
In a non-geodesic representation it is curvilinear.
I^a is w local world frame invariant, but it is a first rank tensor
under O(1,3) Lorentz group.
A^a is the quantum renormalizable SPIN 1 gravitational Yang-Mills
intrinsic warp field from localizing the 4-parameter T4 where the "gauge
transformations" are essentially Einstein's local coordinate patch
overlap transition functions of differential geometry. There is a lot of
redundant non-physical gauge freedom that is divided out in G-orbit
equivalence classes like the Faddeev-Popov method in Yang-Mills gauge
theory with Feynman path integrals. This solves Einstein's 1917 "Hole
Problem"(Rovelli, Ch 2).
A^a is the Yang-Mills analog of the electromagnetic 4-potential for the
U(1) internal symmetry group. The tangent fiber indices "a" play the
role of "internal symmetry" indices. There are in fact 10 1-form
compensating gauge fields one for each parameter of the universal
Poincare group of 1905 special relativity that has no gravity or torsion
fields.
Next locally gauge O(1,3) to get the 6 antisymmetric independent spin
connection 1-forms of the torsion fields
S^a^b = S^a^budx^u = - S^b^a
The "Russian"(i.e. Kibble-Shipov) Einstein-Cartan torsion field 2-form is
T^a = De^a = de^a + W^ac/\e^c = T^auvdx^u/\dx^v
The Einstein curvature 2-form is
R^a^b = DS^a^b = dS^a^b + S^ac/\S^c^b = R^a^buvdx^u/\dx^v
The Einstein-Hilbert action density is the scalar
R(-g)^1/2 ~ {abcd}R^a^b/\e^c/\e^d
{abcd} is the 4th rank antisymmetric tensor

Then what is the relevance of the torsion tensor?
Read Richard Hammond. Read Gennady Shipov. Read Hagen Kleinert on
torsion. Read TWB Kibble. The only extension of Einstein's 1915 GR of
physical interest so far is the curvature-torsion Einstein-Cartan theory.
1. Locally gauging 10-parameter Poincare theory gives Einstein-Cartan
curvature-torsion theory.
2. Richard Hammond claims to observe torsion radiation from quantum spins.
3. The Russians claim it as well.
4. There is a close connection of the 6-parameter torsion field to the
6D Calabi-Yau space of string theory.

5. Kleinert shows that curvature is disclination defect density in a "4D
world crystal lattice", torsion is dislocation defect density.
6. You need the torsion field to convert Einstein's dark energy
cosmological constant into a local variable field that can be controlled
for applications to metric engineering warp and wormhole.

Yes, I agree with the connection to string theory - I have been

Hammond attended our torsionics workshop at ISSO in Summer 2000 at 3220
Sacramento St, San Francisco funded by Joe Firmage. Faustin Bray (Sound
Photosynthesis) has all of it on video including R. Kiehn, J.P. Vigier,
me, Bernie Haisch, Bill Page (Canadian Ministry of Defense), Gennady
Shipov, Vladimir Poponin, Giovanni Modanese, Saul-Paul Sirag, Ken
Shoulders, Kirk Hawkins now at SARA in Huntington Beach, CA, John
Brandenberg and others. Faustin, I think, even has video of the 2000
Budapest meetings with Maric and Dragic from Beograd on Vigier's "cold
fusion" "tight atomic states" experiments in Beograd using a plasma
pinch to try to get a new kind of non-nuclear "atomic power" generator.
Hammond said in 2000 that US Navy cut his contract as soon as he got
positive evidence of torsion waves from his actual experiments! This
seems to give Akimov's claims in Moscow more credibility, but I do not
have enough information to really know. Suffice it to say we should not
stupidly assume like Skeptics from CSICOPS, that there is no fire behind
the smoke and mirrors in this Looking Glass War that James Jesus
Angleton was, it now seems very likely, very much part of when he was alive.

FWIW, in his 1994 article in 26 J. of Gen Rel and Grav. p247, he
presents a theory of gravitation with propagating torsion based on the
assupmtion that the torsion can be derived from the exterior derivative
of an antisymmetric potential, and sys "one may view the torsion field
as the physical manifestation of the antisymmetric field found in the
string theory Lagrangians." Apparently, in all of his paper he finds
the source of torsion to be the intrinsic elementary particle spin. He
concludes on p. 262 that the "inescapable physical interpretation is
that the torsion is a propagating spin field, the source of which is the
spin of elementary particles." All of his research apparently is
supported by a NASA grant. Wonder why?

Richard Hammond was at U. of N. Carolina Chapel Hill Physics Dept 9 in
2006. I tried to convert his 1997 article on Torsion Power from PDF to
Word but it didn't work very well, unreadable. But his latest articles
can be found at
http://eprintweb.org/S/authors/gr-qc/ha/Hammond
and he still refers to radiative torsion waves in his May 2006 , and his
1997 J. of Gen Rel and Grav, vol 29 article considered "the special
case of a particle with spin that is able to flip from spin up to spin
down, but otherwise fixed in space," and he gave an equation for "the
time average power radiated, demonstrating that torsion waves carry
energy and that one origin of the radiation comes from a particle with
spin flipping from spin up to spin down." He said the torsion "power is
proportional to the fourth power of the frequencies." He also said
experimentally one might look at rotating compact stellar objects "where
high density torsion waves may have profound influence on the
evolutionary process."
Hammond's email at UNC is

and his at N. Dak State U is

I don't know him.
