Object: Schrodinger Equation question
I know this might sound stupid here but...can anyoane tell me what
actually IS this schrodingereq. cause i can't find anything, about it,
related to something i know, on the net...this dosen't seem to be
related to the eq. of a wave because as i know a wave eq. should
contain wave length, frequency, amplitude..stuff like that...or does it
contain that and i don't know...pls tell me cause i need to understand
this..

Don't confuse a wave equation with a *solution* to a wave equation.
Such a solution is a function (usually of space and time coordinates),
and the wave equation usually deals with derivatives of this function.
It is the *solutions* that exhibit amplitudes, wavelengths,
frequencies, stuff like that.

Hi, Haos,

I know this might sound stupid here but...can anyoane tell me what
actually IS this schrodingereq. cause i can't find anything, about it,
related to something i know, on the net...

What do you know, that you would like related to the Schr=F6dinger
equation? If you put "Schr=F6dinger equation" into Google you get
351,000 hits. If you put in "Schrodinger equation", you get 210,000.
The Schr=F6dinger equation was the first form of quantum mechanics which
gave sensible results. It's the only equation you ever need if you want
to do theoretical quantum chemistry.

this dosen't seem to be
related to the eq. of a wave because as i know a wave eq. should
contain wave length, frequency, amplitude..stuff like that...

No, you misunderstand what wave equations are. The simplest wave
equation is one for a wave in a taut string, and it is
d2y/dt2 =3D c^2*d2y/dx2
You won't find the wave length, frequency or amplitude anywhere. The
equation is valid for all wavelengths, all frequencies and all
amplitudes.

or does it
contain that and i don't know...pls tell me cause i need to understand
this..

Could you tell us why?
Cheers,
Zigoteau.

In its most general form, the Schroedinger equation is
H|psi> = E|psi>
H is the Hamiltonian, E is the time evolution operator i*hbar*d/dt, and
|psi> is a vector in a Hilbert space.
For a free particle we have
H = P^2/2m
with P the momentum operator -i*hbar*d/dx. Slap an <x| on both sides,
and get
-hbar^2 d^2/dx^2 psi(x) = i hbar d(psi)/dt
which is a wave equation. Plane waves psi = exp i(kx-wt) satisfy that
equation.
