seek freezer compressor that is efficient under intermittent prime power |
I want to run a freezer compressor directly from the shaft of a
windmill. Ie, varying /intermittent prime movements.
What flavor of compressor will perform most efficiently in this
application?

Water cooled semi-hermetic. You should be able to find a used one cheap.

could you elucidate, as to why this ian efficient set-up for this
application? I am not familiar with compressor characteristics

Gotta ask: Do you have a clue about the subject? Anyway, semi-hermetic
compressors have a pulley driven crank. Dig? Your only other hope is to
create heat or electricity and drive an NG or propane type cooling system
(Einstein patented a cute one) or a Peltier Effect solid state one.

After twenty years of working with do it yourself boat refrigeration
and writing four books on the subject, my advice is don't mount the
refrigeration compressor on a wind mill. First there is no practical
way to return the oil to the compressor and second the starting loads
are a problem.
If the daily heat loads of the box to be refrigerated are less than
12,000 Btu, a variable speed variable voltage DC compressor connected
to a wind generator could solve your problem. The power from the
generator can be stored in hold over tanks inside the refrigerator or
is batteries.

This sounds somewhat like the working characteristic of a water
pumping wind mill, for which the tradition was to use a multi blade
prop with good starting torque, inefficient though it is at speed.
If you are constrained to use a sizable fraction of the power of a
regular mill; then you might find it necessary to slip the drive until
there is available torque to spin the compressor.
Thinking further out of the box: the ammonia/hydrogen cycle or
something similar which demands only a heater might be a simpler
option - a wind mill could alway provide some heating, without the
startup potential barrier.....

depending on how big the box is, you might want to consider using an
automotive type compressor. The expansion device, evap and condenser coils,
and desired temps(freezer is generally -10ºF)

coils, and desired temps(freezer is generally -10ºF) are going to be
determined by the box size, the refrigerent used, and a whole lot of other
design parameters.
