1 % of gop . 16 billion bucks.
200 billion spent.
Thats a chunk of change with nothing to show for other than a grave

Where does nasa blow 16 billion a year at ?
Well a $ 10 hammer cost $ 1000.
The idiot that sold the $ 1000 hammer donated $ 100 to the senate that
voted for it.
The senate used the money to get elected.
Thats money laundering .
At the same time they dont fix anything and keep running the same old

However... Anyone know if the shuttle can fly itself home on autopilot or

The space shuttle already does fly all the way to landing with
nearly zero manual input from the pilot. Just about the only thing the
pilot actually does in practice is to apply (extra) pressure to the
wheel brakes, and that's only to give the pilots something to do. All

So, Mark, now that the statements from NASA that they were wrong to

the effect that NASA can do no wrong? Weren't you a fool to attack

My above statement to Frazir has nothing to do with NASA and its
well documented lack of anything resembling good management. My
statement was not a vote of confidence for NASA. I have no confidence
in NASA. What I also have none of is patience with Frazir, who for
YEARS has shown an absolute lack of both real knowledge and anything
resembling care & compassion for people. Just the other day he posted
on this board a wish for the death of Mr. Wake. Frazir WANTS the
shuttle orbiter to fail. He WANTS the crew to die. He WANTS to be able
to ramble on thereafter that he told us all so. Frazir a PERVERT.

Okay, Mark, but don't think you're telling us something we don't
already know. My point was not about how perverted the man is, but how
badly you let him get to you with his tactics. He's got you reacting
to his personality so that in your attack against him you seem to love
NASA all the more, and that can't be good, I felt.
His point is one side of an argument with which both you and I agree.
The argument is so important that we must not let personal feelings
interfere with our complaints. The mismanagement in NASA is much more
important to us than getting back at tj, esp. when we make it look as
if it is okay for NASA to continue on with its gross non-reform.
We can load up our space history with much loss of life, or move with
measured steps to better guarantee success. Tj's complaint is no less
valid just because just because it comes from him, it just makes it
easier for others to argue against it because of who he is. He is no
innocent in this struggle. Remember that politics makes strange
bedfellows, always.

Mark, I can appreciate your comments about the reasons why tj's so
upset. You have eloquently responded to what you perceive is the
motive of tj's complaints.
But that is only one possible ulterior motive and not necessarily the
most correct one. Nothing in tj's message merits your shooting the
messenger to the extent you have wounded him. See where others have
posted less serious contentions about his motives, which can be
described as "doomsayer", or "alarmist".
I think you have attacked tj unfairly, as he may feel the same way I
feel about this turn of events. NASA was thoroughly shaken up (at
least in the press) after the horrible killing of so many brave
astronauts, and the reason given for that was to change the pressures
of lift-off priorities. The whole speech was about NASA putting
lift-off schedules ahead of the safety of the crews, and much ado was
made about changing that to safety above all other priorities.
tj is simply pointing out that was just hogwash and nothing has really
changed, it is still schedules over safety no matter what. We all hope
for the safe return of the brave people aboard, but we fear that the
reasons used to allow lift-off in spite of the problems which the
safety systems identified still show that the goal of "safety first"
failed.
The problem of the lost spaceship was identified as being problems
which were fixed for subsequent flights, but when new problems arose
and could not be resolved, the flight went off anyway with a hope and a
prayer in the same-o same-o NASA tradition of meeting lift-off windows.
That is the basis of my complaint and I assume that is the same for tj
Frazir.
I was a propeller repairman in the military, but even as a lowly
propman I had the power to ground aircraft with a red X on the status
of a problem identified by the pilot of the ship as one needing to be
looked at to ensure the safety of the crew and passengers on
subsequent flights. I took my responsiblity very seriously and refused
to allow flights when I was unable to fix a problem, even when the
pilots themselves begged me to let them go when they felt the problem
was too little to worry about. I did not wish to be responsible for
the lives of the soldiers aboard a ship I was not sure could make the
long flight from the far East to California.
Some problems had backup systems which would help if the problems got
worse, and so some pilots were able to argue against my red X and they
were allowed to fly. That was fine with me so long as I could not be
held responsible for all those lives if they didn't make it home.
None of my cleared Xs failed to make it home, and I knew I was right in
fighting for those who could not argue with the pilot's confidence born
of much experience with the great airplanes of that time. They had no
say in the matter, and I was the only chance for them to get home -
late, but better late than never. The astronauts trust the rocket
scientists even though that trust has been misplaced at times resulting
in "accidents" which could have been avoided if someone had not cleared
a big red X without first fixing the problem.
So I know what tj's talking about, and I feel the same anguish for what
I see is happening all over again, just so that NASA can meet schedules
and "windows". Like tj, I think the reform claimed for NASA is a big
lie because the systems identified a problem and NASA could not find
the source of it and decided to go anyway since it "probably" will not
happen again.
It was not a fuel gauge to determine the level of fuel, but a critical
gauge which must work properly at the time required. Why was it not
replaced? Takes too much time or too expensive to do that? What the
hell, there's priorities involved here, and we don' need no stinking
gas gauge fouling up our schedules! Probably nothing anyway.
Yep, same-o same-o NASA.

Shuttle problems are much more fundamental than just "fixing one red X".
The concept of thermal insulation with tiles have proven again and again
unsafe - they keep falling off with and without obvious reasons.
When russian Buran made its first flight, russians have seen 4
tiles break off (it did not cause any damage as such). And yet this alone
have caused grounding the Buran project forever - because of
unpredictability of such events. It took one flight to "get it".
Another big cause of trouble is the fuel tank that is not
aerodynamically smoothly connected to everything else. Just the way how
intuitively ugly the combo looks already says that it is unsafe. In
aviation the old good principle "beautiful airplane does beautiful
flying" keep holding until now, but somehow NASA decided they know better.
Look at the SpaceShipOne and White Knight combo - it looks like a
dolly and I bet it is safe enough (not to mention it costs only 100k to
build).
Basically if decision would be up to me, I would ground Shuttle program
for good right now. Enough is enough. I would consider the whole thing
as an experiment with a negative outcome. Negative outcome can be a
"positive result" in research and finding it might be worth the money,
but only if you learn from it.
Regards,
Evgenij
