impenetrable mumbo-jumbo; insist on the existence of fantastic mystical
forces, yet can produce no evidence of these forces; and enforce a
rigid guild structure of beliefs in order to maintain their positions
and status. The Middle Ages? No, the current situation in university
physics departments. I just invented the part about the hoods.
The upper rungs of the particle-physics faculties at Princeton,
Stanford, and elsewhere in the academy are today heavy with advocates
of "string theory," a proposed explanation for the existence of the
universe. String theory seeks to explain why, at the very minute scale,
matter appears to be constructed from vibrating nothing. Smash up
subatomic particles into smaller units such as quarks, and the quarks
don't appear to have content-puzzling, to say the least. String
theory says that these seemingly amorphous infinitesimal aspects of
matter are made from other dimensions, compressed to a smallness that
strains imagination. In various versions, the theory also seeks to
explain how the Big Bang could have been possible, to reconcile the
extremely tiny realm of quantum mechanics with the cosmic kingdom of
general relativity, and to answer whether the expansion of our universe
will stop or continue forever.

snarky one star amazon review for NEW to a laudatory five star review,
so as to secure future NSF funding. And Michio Kaku added Woit as a
friend on his myspace page, after a call from his media team.
"I've seen darker days than this," Brian Greene smiled, recalling the
bar scene with the hot chick in his PBS mini-series. "I already got my
two string theory coffee table books out and am set. I know that I have
secured the Nobel--in literature."
Witten said, "It is time to make peace. The most important thing that
we ST, LQGers, and Not Even Wrongers must do is continue to oppose
physical theories, which unify disparate physical phenomena in the same
physical framework. Otherwise mathematical masturbation will fall out
of favor, and we will have to join the proletariat in working for a
living and taking what they're giving."
I wish Woit would have talked more about his views on the future of
physics. For it is not enough to criticize, and I would hate to see the
future of physics dominated by those untying the knots of String
Theory.
ST hath failed. Utterly and completely. It could not have failed more
with twice as much NSF fundining.
String Theory was the only game in town, and now there are two--ST &
deconstructing ST.
But there is another that actually unifies QM & SR & GR with a physical
model: MDT--it's physics!

But there is another that actually unifies QM & SR & GR with a physical
model: MDT--it's physics!

When nobody could measure nor detect the supposed ether, Einstein
proclaimed, "there is no ether." When experiments showed that light
existed only in quantized packets, Einstein proclaimed that light only
existed in quantized packets, and he won the Nobel Prize. When spectra
from atoms showed discreet energies, Niels Bohr proclaimed that
electrons orbits were quantized, and he received a Nobel Prize. When
Maxwell's Equations had a recurring constant, Maxwell used c to denote
it, and Einstein proclaimed that the speed of light must be constant
for all observers-and so Special Relativity was born. When Einstein
juxtaposed objects falling towards the earth getting closer together
with the fact that two people starting at the equator, walking on
originally parallel lines of longitude towards the North Pole, would
come together because they were walking on a curve surface, Einstein
proclaimed that the space-time around a massive object must also be
curved. This along with Einstein's realization that the force of
gravity would be rendered null in free-fall, lead to General
Relativity.
And so it is that in the above paragraph you have the roots of the
greatest achievements of physics in the past 100+ years, dwarfing
String Theory, Loop Quantum Gravity, and thousands of their variatons,
which deal in the abstruse, complicated, muddled, and mythological
worlds which are safe from physics simple rigor.

didn't have. From the Slate piece:

"Today if a professor at Princeton claims there are 11 unobservable
dimensions about which he can speak with great confidence despite an
utter lack of supporting evidence, that professor is praised for
incredible sophistication. If another person in the same place asserted
there exists one unobservable dimension, the plane of the spirit, he
would be hooted down as a superstitious crank."

Not exactly a guy who gets it ... rather, a guy who's trying to make a
different point altogether.
