Speed of light while not in vacuum. |
Exactly how does the speed of light slow down when it is not in a
vacuum? Is this caused by the absorption and reemission of light? Or
the virtual absorbtion and reemission of light?
Also, does this have anything to do with why some particles have mass,
which is because the higgs field acts like a non-vacuum where
particles have mass which is dependant on the higgs field and how much
the particle generally interacts with the higgs field?
Does the fact that light travels less than c change its momentum and
it energy in a way such that it has a nonzero root squared norm?

Quantumly speaking, yes. Between atoms, the photons travel at the speed of
light. At the atoms, there is a delay between absorption and re-emission,
so average speed of the photons is less than c.

Think about it. The energy and momentum of each photon while travelling
between the atoms is the same as when in free space. What happens to the
energy and momentum between absorption and subsequent re-emission? SO what
can you say about the average energy and momentum?
