Spinning electron is not like a little spinning ball |
I posted most of this in another thread, but it seems like a frequently
brought-up issue.
It is mentioned frequently by physicists that quantum mechanical spin
is not like other angular momentum that is familiar to us when we see a
cue ball with "English" on a billiards table. A spinning electron is
not like a little charged spinning ball.
"Well, how do you know?" is a perfectly reasonable question.
For one thing, we do not see any structure to an electron. Moreover, we
can detect no measurable radius for an electron. We know the radius of
the electron, if it has one at all, is less than 1E-18 m, but beyond
that we no nothing more.
"Maybe it has a very, very, very small radius. How can it not have a
radius if it has mass? If it has mass, then it must be made out of
stuff, and if it is made out of stuff, then that mass must take up
*some* room, so there must be a radius."
No, not necessarily. Mass and volume are two completely independent
quantities. One being nonzero does not mean the other is nonzero.
Everything we know that has both (and if it has both then it also has
an average density) is a *composite* object, and the volume in that
case has to do with the range of *interactions*, not the space occupied
by stuff.
But let's suppose you're right for a moment and let's take a
conservative, relaxed estimate of the size of the electron. Even if
it's an overestimate, we can learn something from this. Because if
something goes dreadfully wrong even for this relaxed estimate of the
size, and we know the problem gets *worse* at smaller sizes, then
assuming the electron is smaller than we can measure doesn't help
matters.
Let's suppose that the rest energy of the electron (mc^2) is
attributable to the energy required for the assemblage of charge to a
small ball of radius r so that
mc^2 = ke^2/r, where 1/k = 4*pi*epsilon_0.
This produces the so-called "classical radius" of the electron:
r = ke^2/(mc^2).
(Now we know experimentally that r for the electron is much, much
smaller than this, and furthermore we're assuming all the charge is on
the surface of the little ball, but correcting for this will only make
the problem worse, as you will see below.)
Now let's suppose that the *measured* spin of the electron (1/2)h-bar
is attributable to the rotation of this little charged ball, and
calculate what tangential velocity a point on the surface of the ball
would have to be.
The moment of inertia of a sphere is (2/5)mr^2, and so the angular
momentum would be
(2/5)mrv. Equating this to the measured spin, and subsituting in the
classical radius, we get
(1/2)h-bar = (2/5)m[ke^2/(mc^2)]v
or v = (5/4)(h-bar)c^2/(ke^2).
I invite you to plug the numbers into this formula.
When you're done staring at that number, keep in mind that using a
*smaller* value of r would result in a *larger* value of v.
This is one of the ways we know that the electron cannot be a little
spinning charged ball.
PD

Go and letch after your fucked up little girl [ Patinha ]
who is too stupid to sort her own life out and

you are even more worthless than ever before.
People fall all over themselves to give Patinha hundreds of dollars,
plane/train tickets, drugs, flowers, dinners, rides, rooms, etc., etc.
Yesterday a store clerk gave her the ten dollar discount she asked for !
what the ***** ? is there no limit ? She's been interviewing at strip clubs.
She started Stripping/Whoring when she turned 14.
At least one of her former partners is still in jail for statutory rape.
She's done some incredibly ba-a-ad stuff in her life,
some of which I can't repeat here.
She sticks with me because I'm hyper Safe_and_Sober... she calls me her nanny.
Patinha's so damn cute ( 23 inch waist, overflowing C cup, often high,
changing hair color, teeny-bikini tan lines, dancing, singing, etc. )
that I _Wish_ I could make her my first real girlfriend since 1990.
She's a constant reminder of what a penniless Geek/Geezer I am.

Hi T_Wake, As I said ( and you keep failing to realize ),
Patinha gets almost anything she wants, including drugs in rehab;
everyone is her fool. She sticks with me because I'm uber safe and sober.
I've learned a _Ton_ from her, so it's not at all a one-way street;
but I hate how old/poor/feeble she makes me feel,
....she makes me face my harsh reality.

This was obviously written by an American who has not been to the UK for

You are the poster boy proof on how the internet can never truly
replace social human interaction. Yet again, you lack the concept that
reading about a subject doesn't educate you on it.

There is only one thing worse than being this pathetic, and that's
wallowing in pathos.
Jeff has mastered the fine art of being not only a loser, but a
self-proclaimed loser.
In contrast, the wonderful thing about some people who truly have next

Hi PD, I'm not a looser in the sense that I never sought out a girlfriend.
Patinha being with me ( teasing me ) is a total accident.
While it's fun to be alone with her while she sings and dances,
it hurts to know that I can't be her boyfriend.
I'm nothing compared to her usual lineup of suitors.

The last time I read one of your posts--this time last year as I
remember--you were the great humanitarian letting young runaway girls
sleep on the floor of your apt--but the "mean landlord" was tossing
your keester out on the street without provocation. You were going to
seek legal advice.
Your wife had left you for another (with a future) and you conceeded
that she was the smart one.
Your life was good--you had food in your belly and smokes in your
pocket. Between Uncle Sam and the spending money you made reading porno
on the street to the blind and illiterate, you were doing quite well.
If the past is the best predictor of future behavior, where will you be
this time next year? Looks like "Jezebel" has turned you into "pimp
daddy" Jeff--but how can that be? She's so young and you so old and
wise?

Hi cnc_tut, Re: How Patinha came to be with me, You told me:
The last time I read one of your posts
--this time last year as I remember--

There are pervs who chase runaway girls, I'm not one of them.
Some young kids moved into my previous rooming house over a year ago.
They did a lot of drugs and attracted a lot of homeless people.
One of those people, Adrian, was a mother who I knew back in 1993.
She had lost her kids to child protective services.
I let her stay with me for a month or so
but she left the minute I got semi frisky ( we never touched ).
After that, a series of people stayed with me, including older/ugly men.
One guy was missing half his face due to a shotgun wound.
While sleeping, some guys would ***** ( and even ***** ) on my floor.
You continued:
...but the "mean landlord" was tossing your keester out on the street
without provocation. You were going to seek legal advice.
Thieving junkies and/or small-time dealers can be high and
obnoxious sometimes, bothering the many older tenants;
so, in the end, it was just me and Patinha... and almost no one else.
My current landlord/managers have no problem with Patinha.
I still have no idea what my previous landlord was up about,
her husband was hitting on Patinha... maybe that was it.
Everyone hits on Patinha... she's just wildly cute like that.
You continued:
Your wife had left you for another ( with a future )
and you conceeded that she was the smart one.
Back at the start of 1988, my ex worked in the same company/building I did,
she wanted more kids, I didn't, so she divorced me to marry a co-worker and
immediately started having kids with him. He was a good dad.
The court system is obsessed with letters and numbers,
having only a notional concern for humanity.
I was having nothing to do with that. Further, I didn't need much money,
so I semi-retired at the age of 28 ( instead of paying child support ).
You continued:
Your life was good--you had food in your belly and smokes in your pocket.
Between Uncle Sam and the spending money you made reading porno
on the street to the blind and illiterate, you were doing quite well.
Dee Dee, a hot-looking ***** who briefly lived with me ( and is still a friend ),
is the one that read porn on street corners ( making good money ).
Although I make very little money and get food assistance,
ever since early 1982, only coding ( Win_XP, C++ ) has ever paid my rent.
Before that I was a full-time missionary for many years.
You asked me:
If the past is the best predictor of future behavior,
where will you be this time next year ?
Patinha will likely be gone by then and I'll just go back to living alone.
Patinha is no charity case, people trip all over themselves to help her.
I'd kick her out in a minute if she caused me trouble.
In conclusion, you asked:
Looks like " Jezebel " has turned you into " pimp daddy " Jeff
--but how can that be ? She's so young and you're so old and wise ?
I don't pimp her, she pimps herself ( and she's good at it ).
Drugs are everything to her ( sex is just a way to get drugs ).
Altough I tell her to not do drugs or steal,
she's an adult who does whatever she wants... not what I want.
As I told PD, I never sought out a girlfriend.
Patinha being with me ( and teasing me ) is a pure accident.
While it's fun to be alone with her while she sings and dances,
it's painful to know that she'll never return my affections.
I'm nothing compared to her usual lineup of suitors.

Hi PD, Not since 1991 have I sought to have a girlfriend.
I still don't want a girlfriend, not even Patinha.
We met quite by accident,
last August I asked her if she wanted to move in and she said yes.
She's cute and all, but she'll never return my affections.
I'm tired of these bums and I will likely avoid them after
Patinha leaves ( or gets kicked out ).

| Title: Girls just want to have fun. |

Hi T_Wake, You reminded yourself to: Stop stalking people, fruitcake.
Please repeat that over and over, day after day and never forget it.
Projecting ( as usual ), you accused me of stalking teenagers...
I had been living in the my rooming house with people my age
for almost 5 years before teenagers moved in ( introducing me to Patinha ).
That's not stalking... they came to me, right where I live,
and we just played well together, for some odd reason
( even though I'm a million times more mature/sober ).
I'm starting to grasp how different I am from precocious teenagers,
we're like two _Vastly_ different species.
I keep reminding myself: Girls just want to have fun.

PD you atarted a serious issue
so why are you bubling nonsense now??
just go on and solve it !!!!!
it is no problem for a great teacher scientist like you ..........
You mean the original post?
Yes, indeed, it is no problem for an elementary school child, either. I
did solve it. All that's needed is to look up the numbers and plug them
in. Do you need help with that?
Here:
In SI units:
epsilon_0 = 8.85E-12 C^2/(N*m^2)
e = 1.60E-19 C
m = 9.11E-31 kg
c = 3.00E8 m/s
Got a calculator?
