COURT'S FAMILY PREPARE FOR STATE FUNERAL

The Court family is making arrangements for a state funeral for Sir
Charles Court who died at the weekend aged 96 (file photo) (AAP: Liza

The family of Sir Charles Court will today meet officials from the
Western Australian Government to make arrangements for a state
funeral.
The former state premier died at the weekend, aged 96.
His son Richard Court, who is also a former WA premier, says details
of the funeral are yet to be finalised, and it is unlikely to be held
before the new year.
"We appreciate it's a difficult time of the year for funerals, when we
are celebrating Christmas, but we do appreciate the generosity being
shown by the State Government and their support in making those
arrangements," he said.
Tributes continue from the community and all sides of politics with
many labelling him a great statesman and the architect of WA's
resources development.
WA Chamber of Minerals and Energy's chief executive Reg Howard-Smith
says one of his most notable achievements was the development of the
North-West Shelf gas project.
"Sir Charles was basically the architect of the West Australian
resources economy," he said.
Curtin University Professor David Black says Sir Charles is in the
same league as John Forrest and the state's first governor and founder
James Stirling.
"It was just his complete devotion and forthright leadership," he
said.
Visionary man
The Chamber of Commerce and Industry says Sir Charles will be
remembered a s one of the most visionary and influential people in
Western Australia's history.
The Chamber's Chief Executive, John Langoulant, says the state's
economic growth and widespread prosperity had its genesis in the work
driven by Sir Charles in expand industry and develop the state's
resources sector during the 60s and 70s.
"The state and nation are indebted to the former premier, who was one
of the architects of the state's booming iron ore and gas industries,"
he said.
"The former premier will be remembered as a true statesman, and a
staunch defender of states' rights."
