Storage expert warns of short life span for burned CDs

http://computerworld.com/hardwaretopics/storage/story/0,10801,107607,00.html

"Unlike pressed original CDs, burned CDs have a relatively short life
span of between two to five years, depending on the quality of the CD,"
Gerecke said in an interview this week. "There are a few things you can do
to extend the life of a burned CD, like keeping the disc in a cool, dark
space, but not a whole lot more."

Interesting but worrying read if you've got lots of priceless data stored
on CDRs.

Gordon

It is total crap, are you saying max 5 years? I have some here from 2000 that
are still fine.
Even in 2001 the Imation DVD_RW had '100 years data rentention guarantee'.
Yes these are in the dark (case), of course you do not put these in sunlight
or an oven.
I still have to find ONE of the several hundred I have that fails.
But then again, my Seagate harddisks last >5 years, my Samsung monitor...
just do not buy crap or misuse stuff.
CD-R and DVD-R is a magnitude better for long time data storage onder moist
conditions (like relative humidity > 80% like here at sea) then tapes,
Tapes and floppies get fungus all over them, and some last only a month.
Some moron had to write some article because magazines are 'out', nobody
buys these anymore here now we all have DSL, and the article must cause enough
'shock' to get people to buy the crap paper.
Or maybe it was dropped by the hollowood anti-copy brigade.
Such enormous ***** *could* originate there.. look at their movies.
