What is he going to do? Herd them through a sluice gate?
I suppose the geese could waddle past.

We just got through clamping down on feeding cattle animal parts.
When did somebody get the bright idea of finding animals and
calling them orphans? People need some serious reality checks.

That would be the hidden feature.

It's been done, although in a slightly different context.
Cf. _Octagon_, Fred Saberhagen. (The book is laughably outdated
in a number of respects, but the gist of it wouldn't be difficult

That's the way the story is being billed: "dispute". But it sounds to
me more like the work of a single psycho. He may have been on private
property, he may have been asked to leave, he may or may not have been
asked nicely: then he not only started shooting, he tracked down
people fleeing him and killed them. It's not even clear if the 8
casualities were all "hunters", because initial reports only put one
weapon between the 8 of them. It's not as if it were a Hatfield's and
McCoy's thing, where two groups opened fire on one another.
OTOH, I was unfamiliar with the concept of "dear stand": a platform in
the woods from which one may comfortably shoot dear. This sounds
about as sporting as shooting buffalo from moving trains, or wolves
from helicopters.

Redneck version!!! Where the ***** did you get this version from? He
was shot at and returned fire... Probably not all 8 fired at him but
what do you want him to do. Run to the group of 8 and politely ask
the one that didn't shoot him to stand aside so he can shoot at the
one that shot him? What an idiot!

Redneck version!!! Where the ***** did you get this version from?

From the breaking news. Later, he was telling your version of the
story, and the two survivors were telling the first version of the
story.

He
was shot at and returned fire... Probably not all 8 fired at him but
what do you want him to do. Run to the group of 8 and politely ask
the one that didn't shoot him to stand aside so he can shoot at the
one that shot him? What an idiot!

Whatever the provocation, he definitely went ballistic -- by his own
testimony he shot at least one fleeing person yelling "help me!" in
the back, and another wounded person. Now, if they had indeed been
using racial epithets and then took a shot at him, this reaction would
be understandable, though possibly somewhere above the minimum force
needed for self-defense. Or maybe it was the minimum necessary to
survive, from his point of view, since if the group was hostile, armed
and numerous, a measured response would have likely resulted in the
survivors tracking and shooting him. So he took the initiative -- in
another context, he'd be Sergeant York.
Overall, he seems to have been a superb fighter and tactician, and the
shame is that we cannot simply skip the trial and instead export him
to Fallujah, where he may apply his skills more to the national good.
The highlights of the trial are broadcast in the opening credits, and
there is little need to watch the rest of the movie. We will learn
about the plight of southeast Asians dislocated in the aftermath of
Vietnam and transplanted to middle America; we will review the story
of the Vietnamese kid who knocked on the front door of a house and was
shot dead; we will learn of the probable effect of this story on the
killer's pysche, and how he vowed never again... and etc.
What we will never learn though is who shot first.

I grew up in small town in Vermont and New Hampshire. It was not unusual to
see teen-age boys (and some girls, too) walking doen the street in hunting
red/orange (no camo clothes then) with rifles and shotguns in hand, heading
for the woods at any time of year, but especially during deer season. Mnay
families had primitive deer camps out in the woods, that were only occupied
a few weeks in the year. Our family would go to my grandmother's farm
house, out in the wilds of Fayston, Vt. A good view of the hunting life is
in the book _Deer Camp_, by John M. Miller, currently available from Amazon
for about $20.
One thing I don't understand from the news reports. Only one of the victims
was armed. It appears that there was a cellphone call early during the
confrontation, and the new people showed up from a hunting camp with no
weapons.

Around here there is a surplus of cattle due to the closing of the US

I think something could be made of that. There are several directions
you could go. People spend that much to pepper junk cars with machine
guns, so maybe the fire power just isn't great enough. $500 to take
out a cow with an RPG -- now we're talking. Hamburger everywhere!
Myself, I don't hunt deer, but I do hunt flies. I use a well balanced
ought three plastic swatter (i.e. 3 for a dollar) which can be flicked
through the air with a sound like an epee. The kill rate is about 9
for 10 on the walls, 1 for 20+ swipes on the wing. But ah... just
make contact, and the tic of fly hitting plastic is followed by a very
un-fly like line drive! Got you, sucka.
As for deer, the only one I ever saw in close encounter was on the
grounds of a nearby Indian Reservation Casino. I may have been more
startled. It was very dark (the way it gets in places without street
lights), and walking back to my outbuilding lodging, I found myself
15-20 ft. from an animal which looked very large and muscular to a
city slicker, just standing in the middle of the road. We stood
motionless for a few long seconds, then it bounded into the woods. No
kidding -- I know deer usually run from people, but here was a animal
which looked like about 120 lbs. of lean muscle with hooves which
could probably do a number on human flesh.
Now _that's_ something I'd like to see -- reverse deer stalking. The
deer bolts from cover and knocks the rifle away with the first kick.
Sigue fast forward to a crime scene tableau with tape and
photographers and the whole nine yards, and county cops looking under
a sheet and saying they hadn't sceen a trampling death that bad since
the winter of '98. Deer Rambo was pushed too far.

I hope your walls are covered with glossy paint, and not the absorbant
matte stuff that retains part of every bug you swat on it.

I hope your walls are covered with glossy paint, and not the absorbant
matte stuff that retains part of every bug you swat on it.

I suppose "But the're not my walls" would be an answer indicating
inconsideration on my part?

Well I'll be. I was going to include the epithet "pointy hooved" in
my account of the deer, but struck it, since I had no idea how I knew
or thought I knew its hooves were pointy. I must have heard this one
before.

Yup. If you hit a deer on the road, the very first action is to
get the hell out of the car. Thrashing hooves will kill you.

I suppose you mean in case the deer is through the windshield.
Otherwise, the deer, presumably being outside the car somewhere, would
seem to be best avoided by staying the hell in the car?

It seems my instinctive respect for the animal I saw wasn't entirely a
city slickers baseless fear -- it had some basis. It sounds like a
healthy deer prefers flight to fight, but a cornered or injured deer
has some means of fight available to it.

I don't think I've ever heard a first-hand account of a deer standing
its ground to a human. Elk, on the other hand, will let you get right
up close and then kick the ***** out of you. They never did that when I
was a kid but they've grown ornery of late. Perhaps because people
refuse to feed them chips and chocolate bars now. Moose, you really
don't want to get close enough to feel the hooves up your *****.

I suppose you mean in case the deer is through the windshield.

The ones I heard about ended up through the roof of the car.

Otherwise, the deer, presumably being outside the car somewhere, would
seem to be best avoided by staying the hell in the car?

Yep. Whatever keeps you away :-). There is usually a second deer.
Getting out to look or help the poor critter is not recommended.
Aha! Physics idea. Would you be hitting the deer from the
front? I'd always presumed that it was the deer hitting the
car. This implies that it tries to jump over the car when
the vehicle becomes a momentary fence. That would explain how
all the stories I heard had the deer trapped through the roof.

One of Dad's hunting friends got gored in the gut by a deer that

Definitely. A city slicker would think of the critter as a Bambi.

Heh. If he was in rut, you might have been viewed as a rival. Don't
wear horns when you're outside.
All animals should be considered as dangerous. Sheesh! It just
occurred to me that is not a widely known fact. Even bunnie
rabbits can injure.
