Sudden recession of sea an ominous harbinger: Expert
Panaji, Jan 8 (UNI) - In the wake of the Tsunami
devastation, a senior ocean science expert has warned
people to flee the shore if there is a sudden recession
of sea water as it an ominous harbinger.
''When we got the alert from our regional office in
Visakhapatnam early on December 26, we advised our
research vessel 'Sagar Sukti' to move into the high seas
from the port immediately,'' Director of the National
Institute of Oceanography Dr S R Shetye told UNI.
He said Tsunamis were nothing but ''shallow waves''
moving at jet speed of 750 kmph. They can neither be seen
nor felt in the high seas with a four km depth, but can
prove deadly as their wavelength ranges between 100 km
and 1000 km with no particle velocity found, he added.
Mr Shetye said it is very difficult to detect Tsunami
waves with the available systems, which are capable of
finding only oscillations in ocean waves. It requires
systems that could measure change in the pressure of
waves, he said.
He said the need is to study landslides, volcanic
explosions and plate tectonics in submarine areas that
can trigger Tsunamis in the region.
Mr Shetye said a study had indicated that the
distribution percentage of Tsunami was the highest in the
Pacific Ocean at 25.4 percent, followed by East Indies at
20.3, Japan and Russia 18.6, Caribbean 13.8,
Mediterranean 10.1, Atlantic 1.6 and Bay of Bengal 0.8.
The largest Tsunami, he said, was reported on November 1,
1755 in the North Atlantic, which destroyed Lisbon port
in Portugal besides downing ships. The December 26
Tsunami triggered by an earthquake measuring nine on the
Richter Scale was considered the fourth largest in the
world.
Emperical studies of the recorded aftershocks showed that
the shock waves were not moving towards the Himalayas in
the North. The wave effect in the sea in the form of
oscillations and reverbrations were noticed for three
days with varying amplitudes.
During the last 2000 years, Mr Shetye said, the world had
recorded as many as 1,422 natural events including 1,171
earthquakes, 65 landslides, 65 volcanic eruptions and 121
other disturbances that had a bearing on the sea.
The NIO had compiled the oscillations of the December 26
Tsunami, which were recorded in places like
Visakhapatnam, Tuticorn, Cochi and Mormugao ports, as
part of its initial study, he added.

The terrorist mission of Jesus stated in the Christian bible:
"Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not so send
peace, but a sword.
"For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the
daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in
law.
"And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.
