Nothing to get worried about either, chicken little, or wonder why every

Why?
BTW, the first reply to your post, by Sam Wormley, gave both
true-color and b&w views of the sunspots. It seems odd to me
that you would ***** about the second reply, which only included
the b&w, and not say word one about Sam's reply.
So I repeat, what's your point? It isn't 'natural[ly]' to me
that true color would be 'welcome' in this thread, which is
about the size of the sunspots, not about the aesthetics of
their presentation.

In attempting to put together a comprehensive FAQ on the Usenet menace
known variously as Jai Maharaj, Jay Stevens, Johnny Maharaj, Jai
Mathura, and combinations thereof, the author of this FAQ deemed it best
to compile and present information from various sources, and let readers
extract for themselves the information that is most useful to them. The
objective of this compilation is to provide information on
Jai/Jay/Johnny Maharaj/Mathura/Stevens that illustrates his essential
bigotry and menacing nature, which has plagued Usenet since it’s inception.

alt.astrology FAQ #23
Who is this “Dr. Jai Maharaj” person who posts so prolifically?
Answer: This person has generated so much annoyance in this and other
groups that Roy Johnson (rjohnson@shell.com) created a FAQ about him.
See that FAQ for full details. (If you cannot find it in alt.astrology,
look in rec.food.veg.) Briefly, his legal name appears to be Jay Stevens
(e.g., this name appears in the articles of incorporation for his
“Mantra Corporation”). He used to post under that name in other
electronic forums, but when he discovered the internet, he decided to
use a more Indian-sounding name, and began calling himself “Jai
Maharaj.” Lately, this name has evolved into “Dr. Jai Maharaj.”
In 1990, he was claiming that his birth name was Jai Mathura. He has
many internet accounts, and he sometimes edits the headers of postings
to obscure their origin and author. He is believed to create alternate
personas and post under additional aliases to give the impression that
he has supporters. Such personas are often recognised by their tendency
to use the term “Swami” for him. He has a “library” of articles that he
posts, re-posts, and re-posts again, ad nauseam; this accounts for his
ubiquity on the net. Each posting contains a .sig file that advertises
his vedic astrology business, so the large volume of his postings
appears to be part of a marketing scheme. (The official purpose of
Mantra Corporation is listed as “business consulting, marketing,
advertising and related services.” Despite anything he might say, this
company is not a non-profit organisation.) Netters have dubbed him “Jai
Mirage” because they think he is a fake—a con man. Don’t be taken in.
And please, please, please don’t respond to his postings; he generates
enough net “noise” as it is. Just put his most usual alias (Jai Maharaj)
and/or all of his net addresses in your kill file for this newsgroup
(see the Jai Maharaj FAQ for a list of these addresses). See # 22 for
instructions about editing a kill file.
For the curious, he once claimed that his birth data are October 7,
1946, 9:15 am (-5:30 h), New Delhi, India, 77E12, 28N36. Oh, and by the
way, he is in the habit of posting a slightly edited version of this
FAQ, changing this answer into an advertisement for himself, inserting a
diatribe against western astrology at the beginning of the file, and
putting his most common alias (Jai Maharaj) at the head of the list of
contributors to the FAQ! There are two terms for this activity:
plagiarism, and copyright violation. (The latter is one of his favourite
activities; he often posts large excerpts from books without the
authors’ permission, and sometimes without giving the authors credit.)
Look, Jai will NEVER go to court, I can GUARANTEE you that.
---Dr. Grubor to Bon Giovanni
Jai Maharaj is but an Upload Mechanic, a fellow on automatic pilot who
over and over and over repeats his same old tired thoughts, over and
over and over. It does not matter that others have read them before.
Uploading daily quantity, not quality, is his thing, you see.

What Jai Maharaj really does:
http://jaimaharaj.reallysuckass.com/
“Perhaps a meeting of properly-screened, active and retired CBI
officials can be arranged outside Bharat (arrangements can be made for a
site here in Hawaii, USA) to discuss these issues in person.”
---Jay Maharaj, 8/30/1997 offering to host discussions for a coup
attempt against the democratically elected Government of India
“Terrorism and violence related to the Islamic way of life and
governance continues to this day………… The same can be said about Jewish
and Christian cultures.”
----Jay Maharaj, 8/12/1997
“Regardless of what Jai Maharaj says, the fact remains that astrology is
humbug.”
---Prem Thomas 8/23/1997
“PADA is an organization that Jai has been widely advertising that Jai
is not only trying to protect, but also actively promoting, an
anti-Semitic neo-Nazi racial propaganda organization and their WWW page.”
---Justin 5/17/1998
As for replying to Jai online, please do watch the headers:
he rather often changes the follow up or Reply to field to
those newsgroups or persons he hopes to needle.
---Bon Giovanni
“Jai got in the fray by attacking Sridhar (both presumably from India,
and familiar with each other on soc.culture.india), and it led to Jai
being banned from posting to r.f.v.c”
----Lu Bozinovich 9/05/1995

----Jay Maharaj, 5/30/1994 promoting secessionist material in
contravention of US laws, particularly those governing immigrants
“What Jai Maharaj does very well is harass the readers of that
newsgroup with cross-postings that have nothing to do with the concept of
being a Vaishnava -- which is what alt.religion.vaisnava is about.”
-----Shrisha Rao, 5/05/1995
“Your USENET post was copied verbatim out of
a copyrighted book. That makes it illegal, as is clearly stated in
the front of the same book.
[……]
Whether or not it is referenced is immaterial. You simply cannot
post an excerp from a book that is copyrighted. You may paraphrase the
information and cite the reference, but you quoted the book. You
broke the law. Whether or not damages could be awarded is a civil
suit matter. This is a criminal matter.
You also failed to note that you were quoting the book, presenting the
information as a Jai Maharaj original. In that you are a blatant
plagiarist.
And in denying that any laws were broken, you become a liar….”
------David Blake to Jai Maharaj, 4/27/1995
“Raam Naam Satya Hai” [Translated as “God is great”]
-----Jai Maharaj, 6/07/1998 responding to the news that a bomb on
board a Pakistani train killed 20 Muslims
“May all that is undesirable leave or become purified for our Bharat Mata!”
-----Jai Maharaj, 8/08/1998 responding to a poster’s vitriol
against Muslims and other minorities
“It would be merely annoying if it didn't provide so much misinformation to
new or occassional readers; preventing such misinformation being the
only reason anybody ever responds to the jai-bot.”
- Narad, Chuck, "The Jai-Bot explained"
rec.food.veg et. al., November 1994
“Like Steve, I've done the research....Those posing as high priests who
pass on fraudulent information--whether knowingly or not--deserve to be
exposed as liars or fools.
JAI: CONSIDER YOURSELF EXPOSED.”

EINSTEIN QUOTE A HOAX
96/5/24
Jay Stevens , Kook of the Month, June 1995
Charges: Vegetarianism, continued harassment of several newsgroups and
religions.
History
Jay Stevens, who always posts as "Jai Maharaj", has long harassed
Hawaii-based newsgroups and posters for no particularly good reason. His
history is long and sketchy, but it's generally agreed that he is one of
the stranger Usenet kooks to ever grace Usenet.
Jai was known to Tim only by occasionally posting his rants about those
members on the news.admin.* hierarchy.
Jai was held in the dungeon from June 16 to to July 14, 1996. He is
currently out on parole.
Skirvin's Notes
Jay Stevens, who posts as "Jai Maharaj" unless he's using one of his
"I'm not Jai!" aliases, is one of the chief cases for modering a
newsgroup. Due to this persistent pestering of their original
unmoderated counterparts, Jai got soc.culture.hawaii and
soc.religion.vaishnava created - which he's none to happy about, as far
as I can tell.
I'm convinced that Jai's real claim to fame actually came from the guy
who wrote that wonderful Quadr0-Pounder post. Damn, that was funny.
'Course, I probably just believe that becase it was the first real
contact I had with Jai - and pretty much the only contact, too. Not that
I missed much, all that I saw otherwise was Jai randomly flaming
somebody...very poorly flaming somebody...
Jai is a member of the Freedom Knights, and he really doesn't like me,
but other than that we don't have much contact.
Daemons' Notes

THE official Dr JAI MAHARAJ [aka Jay Stevens] FAQ/FYI (Very interesting
indeed!!)
Subject: The Jai FAQ
From:

Date: 1996/10/24
Message-Id: <846195270.17326@dejanews.com>
Hi, kids. I see we've had some people treating Jay like a reasonable person.
Don't do that. Do not respond to "Jai Maharaj". He's trolling, and you're
making him happy.
Incidentally, I wrote the Jai FAQ, and it had nothing to do with ISKCON,
just like *nothing* Jay attributes to ISKCON has *anything* to do with
ISKCON
But it sure is fun to type, isn't it? ISKCON, ISKCON, ISKCON. Sounds
X-filesy.
Here's the Jai FAQ, with just a few updates. If you've got suggestions, as
always, let me know.
I'm posting through DejaNews, as our news poster is broken. I hope that the
Followup-To line got set properly. Cross-posting is one of Jai's tools, so
if you followup for some reason, *please* make sure you're only going to
newsgroups of interest.

The Frequently Asked Questions about Jay "Jai Maharaj" Stevens
maintained by:

***************************************************************************************
Notes:
Well, it's been over a year since the last update, and Jai has been a busy
little nut, but I haven't kept up with his antics. However, I've been
getting requests for an updated FAQ, so here it is with two new Q&A's
(#19-20). If you have experienced Jai in a way not covered in this FAQ,
please mail the details to
.
Though he often criticizes this FAQ as full of lies, Jai has been unable to
point out any, despite the many requests to do so.
Recent Changes:
14-Oct-96: The astrology quote attributed to Einstein is bogus. see #19
McDonald's honors Jai with a sheep burger! see #20
One more quote denouncing him (see end of References)
This is the Jai FAQ for rec.food.veg. I used to say it has few sources,
but the response has been so great that I have lots of sources. Still
some inaccuracies, but unlike Jai, we're trying to propagate the truth.
1. Isn't Jai just a well-meaning, enthusiastic vegetarian with a poor
understanding of netiquette?
A: No, and it is extremely important to understand this. Jai is a
malicious troll intent on introducing as much noise into various
newsgroups as possible, specifically noise about himself. It is
pointless to try to reason with him, pointless to instruct him in
proper netiquette, and not worth your while to debunk his arguments
because he will simply repost them.
Jai was voted "Kook of the Month" for May/June 1995:

From:

(M. Legare)
Newsgroups: alt.usenet.kooks

A tough race, and one with a little bit of controversy.

I received a LOT of votes for Senator Exon, the author of the "On-Line
Communications Decency Act." Now, as much as I would personally

LOVE to

pitch this particular brickbat at ol' Exy, as we call him, he has NEVER
posted to the Net. Consequently, he really doesn't qualify for

this award.

Sorry to the 53 people who mailed me votes...

However, we DO have a winnah...

"Jai Marahaj" (

)

Also known as "the man who WON'T STOP POSTING to soc.culture.hawaii and
about a bazillion other places". Limited repetoire, but it's some

kind of

vegetarian / buddhist / psycho / loonie / spambot thing here... he

got a

lot of "support"...

2. Why doesn't Jai post reputable information? He undermines his own
credibility with his questionable and misleading data.
A: Jai is not interested in credibility. He is interested in Jai. He
simply wants attention. In fact, he is getting much pleasure from
reading this very posting.
3. Is he actually a doctor? A vegetarian? A Hindu?
A: He is almost certainly not a doctor. His status as a vegetarian and/
or Hindu is largely irrelevant. He posts for the sake of posting,
not to further a cause or engage in discussion. He is like Jim Bakker,
in that you don't know whether he believes it, and ultimately it
doesn't make any difference. For the record, he has claimed to be a
Hindu, and a vegetarian.
Vivek Pai (vivek@owlnet.rice.edu) comments on "Jai's" knowledge of
Hinduism:
"If he is, he's definitely not particularly knowledgeable. One of the
central books in Hinduism is called the Bhagavad Gita. It consists of
18 chapters, and 700 verses total.
...
There was a book published in 1987 by Phulgenda Sinha called "The Gita
as it was". [It includes] the author's claimed "original" Gita, which
he says is just 84 verses.
...
Jai seems unable to detect that this book (which ...contains only
one-eighth as many verses as the real Bhagavad Gita) is not the
Bhagavad
Gita. In fact, he refers to the book as a "translation in English"
of the
Bhagavad Gita.
...
Even someone who's only passingly familiar with the Bhagavad Gita would
have been able to detect that the book in question bears little
resemblance to any version of the Bhagavad Gita."

(Jerry DeGuzman) claims to have met Jay Stevens, and in
their time together, Jay told him that others post messages as "Jai
Maharaj", so it could be a cooperative effort, with Jay as ringleader.
Jerry also credits Jay as having done a Jyotish reading, indicating
that he does practice Vedic astrology.
"Jay had dark skin, long beard (and mustache, I think). Whitish/gray
hair, mid-forty to late-fifty years old...I think he was wearing some
kind of leather slippers -- tongs -- like what grandpa used to wear.
I remember dark, drab clothing on Jay."
** Full text of Jerry's story available on request **
Apparently, the "Dr." appelation came from a time when he was pretending
to be a professor at Case Western. He indicated to Jerry that he held
two engineering degrees.
4. So where did the name "Jai Maharaj" come from?
A: There are several theories, but the most probable answer is:
Jay Stevens --> Jay Mirage --> Jai Mirage --> Jai Maharaj
"Jai Maharaj" means "conquering (or victorious) king", which is not
likely to be a real name. His real name is apparently Jay Stevens,
which
of course means nothing; in his case, that is appropriately descriptive.
5. Where does Jai get all his material?
A: "Diet for a New America" is a popular book from 1987 by John Robbins.
"Hinduism Today" is a periodical published by the Himalayan Academy in
San Francisco, CA. It is now available on the Web:
http://www.aloha.net/~htoday/htoday.html
Jeremy Rifkin is another advocate of vegetarianism with several
popular works under his belt.
Jai posts from a collection of perhaps 50 excerpts from those three
sources. He usually prefaces each repost with some name-calling
directed at previous posters or "animal-killers" in general.
6. So is this Mantra Corporation for real?
A: Yes, there really is a Mantra Corporation. From the State Department
of Commerce and Consumer Affairs database (accessible via telnet to
fyi.uhcc.hawaii.edu; follow the menus through Business Registration
System, then Dept. of Commerce and Consumer Affairs):

6a. What else is known about him?
A: Shyamasundara Dasa had an ugly business dealing with him, which
allowed him these personal tidbits:
Date of birth: Oct 7, 1946, 9:15AM
Place of birth: New Delhi, India
Real name: Jai Mathura (but was using Jai Stevens)
Address: as given above
Phone: 808-948-4357

7. Does anyone take Jai seriously?
A: There's a poster named Abhay who seems to. Recently, he has stopped
endorsing and encouraging Jai, perhaps tiring of him as the rest of
us have. Abhay is inflammatory, but is probably an actual annoying
person rather than a pseudonymous poster.
Every so often someone else pipes up in support of something Jai has
said. We think this is only people who haven't been exposed to him
long.
7a. Is the recreational value provided by Jai more than his nuisance value?
A: At least one poster finds the responses to Jai's posts "enormously
funny".
We at Jai FAQ headquarters find a laugh at the expense of so many to be
extremely low-brow. If you're going to troll, do it in groups that
aren't
trying to have serious discussions.
8. Why does he have so many accounts?
A: We don't know. Spreads like a fungus, though, doesn't he?
Recently (spring 95) his posts have originated from "mantra.com",
a subnet(?) of caprica.com; "aloha.com", and (I'm told) "eskimo.com".
This change may be due to the fact that the postmaster of Freenet has
promised to wipe his account if the spams can be shown to originate from
there. Caprica.com, ironically billing itself as "the responsible
Internet provider," considers Jai's behavior to be reasonable free
speech.
9. Why does he post the same thing over and over and over?
A: It allows him to maintain a high degree of visibility without actually
having to think up anything new.
10. So why doesn't everyone just killfile him?
A: Natural human optimism makes people believe that if you just reason
with someone, they'll behave sociably. Unfortunately, there are
pathological people who take a perverse pleasure in resisting such
invitations. People hoping to change him are actually encouraging
him to continue his disruptive behavior.
10a: Is there any truth to the rumor that Jai is only trying to break the
world's record for being included in the most kill files?
A: While the Guinness Book of World Records has no entry for this catagory
at this time, Jai is sure to hold the record when kill files are
included.
11. What is an "Om Shanti"?
A: It's a song sung by Hindu sailors. No, seriously, "Om Shanti" is a
chant
used by Hindu holymen as a buzzword. "Shanti" means "peace," and may be
used as a greeting. "Om" is a religious word.
12. a. Why doesn't Jai answer questions in his own words?
b. Why doesn't Jai respond to challenges or criticisms in a civil
manner?
A: He can't. Those are behaviors associated with rational human beings,
and Jai is not rational, and in all probability is not a human being.
13. Does Jai have a problem with reading comprehension?
A: Jai doesn't bother reading or comprehending. That would take valuable
time away from reposting. Instead, he uses the very sophisticated
reasoning technique referred to as "My ears are plugged, I can't hear
you."
14. Are there any newsgroups I can read that are safe from Jai's postings?
A: Try a moderated group. rec.food.veg.cooking in particular, for those
interested in vegetarianism.
15. Which of his accounts is the best to send e-mail to?
A: Jai does not respond to e-mail. Mail sent to it will simply disappear,
unless you are angry and belittle him, in which case, he will mail your
postmaster and threaten them with "stalking and harrassment" charges.
However, if you have a personal message for him, such as a complaint
that his post was inappropriately crossposted, send it to (all of):

(I haven't seen these)
(this is the address listed for him in the
whois database, see #6)
and, if appropriate, his postmaster (depending on which account he
posted from):

Be sure to include the original, with all headers, and remember that
"PGP-Encrypted E-Mail is Preferred!" (a statement from the header of
every "Jai" post).
If you really want an email reply, mention that the FAQ states
that he will not reply by email. You'll get your own personal
copy of the masterful "ROY JOHNSON, LIAR AND CHEAT" with a
forward by the editor.
15a. How about writing to his sysadmins?
A: Though it is unlikely to do any good as an individual act, perhaps
complaints from many users will spur some action.
The postings from "
" come from "jai@caprica.com". If
an inappropriate post comes from there, mail your complaint to
. Include the original, and mention which
groups it appeared in. You should get a response that mentions the
1st amendment.
16. How can I kill him?
A: Heh, heh. Well, you can add him to your killfile. Here's how:
In gnus (mark articles deleted with "Jai Maharaj" in the from line):
(gnus-kill "From" ".*Jai Maharaj" "d")
rn compatible (mark all articles read with "Jai Maharaj" in the
headers):
/Jai Maharaj/h:j
Tin compatible:
******************************* SNIP HERE
****************************
# 1st line 1=(Subject: only) 2=(From: only) 3=(Subject: & From:)
# K=(kill) H=(auto-selection)
# 2nd line 0=(kill on all newsgroups) >0=(kill on specific
newsgroup)
2 K
0
*Jai Maharaj*
001 KILL
17. So what is this forgery Jai accuses you ("ROY JOHNSON, LIAR, etc.") of?
A: Some time ago, I was wondering how easy it was to change the headers
in a posting -- could I just type the From: line? So I made up an
address, "jai@navy.gov (Adm. Jai Maharaj)" and posted a little spoof
about how Jai had joined the navy. I set the distribution to shell,
but it got out anyway. The first line of the body said "This is just
a spoof", but of course "Jai" has removed that because it would make
it obvious that he is lying. There was obviously no intent to deceive
on my part -- as if anyone could actually reduce his credibility.
18. Does "Jai" rhyme with "Jay" or "lie"?
A: Jai sort of rhymes with jay, but it has an 'a' sound like the ai in
fair.
"Jaiy" And you say the 'y'. Think of "j ai year," then don't say the
"ear" from "year". A modestly denegrating alternative would be "Hai,"
which rhymes with "lie".
(courtesy of Anant Kartik Mithal)
"J eh ee" is a pretty good approximation.
19. Did Einstein really endorse astrology?
Perhaps, in some post-mortem personal communication with Jay. He did
not, however, do so in COSMIC RELIGION, WITH OTHER OPINIONS AND
APHORISMS (Covici-Friede, New York; 1931), as cited by Jay. At least
two people (Steve James and Wade Ramey) have posted they they have
searched the entire book and found no mention of astrology.
20. How does McDonald's respond to Jai?
A: From the Daily Brief (an e-mail newsletter):
* Only McDonald's restaurant in the world with no beef on the menu
opened in New Delhi, India yesterday.
- features the Maharaja Mac with 2 "all-mutton patties."
This service is a product of Intelligent Network Concepts, Inc.

the library is hopelessly out of date and mostly innaccurate. usually
posted to r.f.v, t.p.a., sci.med.nutrition, alt.culture.hawaii,

Includes an Xref: line to cause the unaware to respond to the entire list

The regular guests of my BBS have, indeed, a thriving collection of
favorite Jay Stevens (the name he used before he decided he was a
doctor, an astrologer, and a "Vedic") lines...
The rest of us have decided that Jay Stevens/Jai Maharaj is:
40+ years old, most likely a realtor, most likely a State employee,
probably not a vegetarian, and probably not very healthy in general.
After he claimed to be dating a member of the DEA, we also determined he's
definately single, and probably hasn't dated since he outgrew his
disco-revival bellbottoms.

"Om Shanti" means "Total Peace." It is used in greeting and departing.
Perhaps "shanti" is of the same root as the Hebrew "Shalom' and the Arabic
"Salaam." The word "om" signifies cosmic evolution of man. There is a
reference about it even in the Bible (in a slightly different way) It also
signifies Brahma, the creator

Jay Stevens hung out on Hawaii's GT Power BBS network in the late
80's early 90's. I'm talking like 89-90, in that area. While my memories
of him specifically are vary vague, they do carry a general feeling of
chronic irritation. One can be very confident to add IBM compatibles as
his platform of choice, as Hawaii's BBS scene in that period was heavily
platform segregated, and GT Power was a very pro-PC environment, and had
a large military subculture. Nothing I remember indicates that he was in
the military, however.

That's not the color of the Sun!

What's your point?

Naturally, a picture in true color would be welcome.

Why? . . .

Why not?

Why not answer my whole post?

Is that important to you?

Yup.

It's not important to me that I answer
any more of your questions.

Jay: Is that important to you?

Tom: Yup.

Jay: It's not important to me that I answer
Jay: any more of your questions.

Jay really is the idiotic kook everyone told me he was. Who
knew? (Well, of course, 'most everyone knew. Now I do, too.)
I've almost gotten used to flakes like him cutting my posts
(without so saying) to avoid hard questions while looking as
though they were answering fully. However, Jay added a little
twist I've seldom seen before.
In this last post to me, he set followups to go only to
himself, not to any newsgroups. While this would have been a
great thing for him to have done with his _first_ post in the
thread, doing it here clearly means he's gone full tilt boogie
kook, trying to shut up me and anyone who replied to his post.
It's no biggie. Some net kooks are honest but cranks; some are
dishonest and cranks. Jay is obviously the latter.
