swimming in ethanol |
Hypothetical question:
If a person managed to fall into a large, deep tank, filled with
ethanol (sp. gr. 0.789), would s/he be able to tread... um, ethanol?
Neglect for the moment any discomfort caused by ethanol fumes,
irritation of mucus membranes, etc., etc.

Ethanol is a carbon compound. It will float on water. So will you.
You will not float as easily in a lighter compound.

Keep in mind treading and floating are two different things.
Float, probably not, tread, would depend a lot on the person, but
for the average person, probably not.

Not for long. And you can experiment easily. Next time you go for a
swim, strap a 40 pound dumbbell on you. Or try to keep your nipples
above the water while vertical.

Or, replace all the water in your body with ethanol.
