"The LHC's circular tunnel -- 27 kilometers (16.7 miles) in
circumference -- is about four times longer and seven times more
powerful than the world's largest ring, located at Chicago's Fermilab,
where most subatomic particle research is conducted now. Fermilab's
accelerator is called Tevatron, drawn from TeV, the abbreviation for
teraelectronvolt, a common unit of kinetic energy in particle physics."
