You must understand I would not give a starving cleric a crust of bread
or a sip of water, but fairness compels be to make the following
observations. In order to do science at all one must accept two things:
1. induction is a fruitful source of hypothesis.
2. the laws of nature are uniform everywere and at all times.
Yet there is no way of proving these theses empirically because that
would assume #1 (hence a circularity) nor can you say empirically that
the laws of nature are not uniform. That would assume we have seen
everything, everywhere for all time. So science is based on unprovable
assumptions which are not empirically verifiable. In regard to #2 read
Hume's -Inquiry-. Hume very nicely disposes of necessary causation as an
a priori principle.
To put a point on this, the most hardnosed scientist (physicist) is
compelled to rely on principles that are in no way provable by empirical
means and are not iherently necessary as synthetic a priori principles.
The only redeeming feature is that Popperian falsification by empirical
means can kill a princple or hypothesis dead. Principles and hypotheses
are not provable empiraclly, but they are falsifiable empirically. Where
as faith-based religions systems have built in "bullet proofing" hence
cannot be falsified.

instances.
A conclusion reached by this process.

There are a lot of real things. The sun, the earth the moon, 7 billion
humans, trees I could go on for ever. Has nothing to do with pain. Go
buy you a shovel and dig a hole 6 cubic feet. By the time you finish
you will come back to what is real. You will know the ground is real.
the earth is real, the stars are real, galaxies are real. Math is
logical but it is not real. Theories may be logical but they are not
real. Stories passed around campfires 2000 years ago may have been true
but evolved into something not even close to their original form from
the embellishment of their telling. I am not going to devote my life to
believing in that.
