The ice will melt |
As it looks the ice glaciers and pole caps will be molten in a few
centuries. This is unavoidable and might
even happen accelerated since China and India have incredible oeconomic
growth.
A Prof. of me warned in the 80s but this scenario will happen. The oceans
will rise between 60 and 100
meters at the end. Thats the future and nobody will be able to change this.
Even it we would stop any consumption of fossile energy immediately all over
the world this process
will happen - maybe a little slower then - but it happens already and cant
be stopped.
We should prepare on this and find out whats the final average temperature
on earth when all ice is molten
as a function of the total consumed fossile energy. There might be a value
which we are not allowed to do
because otherwise we will get the climate before life was possible on earth.
We kill ourself because its the most oeconomic and cheapest we can do.
Therefore it will happen.
All this because we will not stop to change the composite of our atmosphere.

water, one normally uses the word "melted".

Beaches at altitudes of 10's of meters above modern sea level
are due to other effects. For example, during the most recent
ice age, the North American plate was depressed by the mile
or so of ice on top of it. Since this ice load has been removed
the land has been rebounding, and can be so observed to still
be rebounding.
The result is you can find many places where the level of beach
has been rising on a (geologically) rapid pace for the last
10,000 years or so. You see layer after layer of beach rock
for 100 meters up a hill. Lots of fun.
So 5 - 10 meters could occur in a few decades.
This is what might be expected from warming the column of water
in the ocean. It's not clear that this can happen, as the deep ocean
is round about 1.5 C, and stays there. Metling the Arctic ice sheet
would have little net effect on sea level. The Antarctic ice sheet
does not seem to be doing any big melt, though the portions floating
do seem to go through periodic rapid size changes. Again, floating
ice has little net effect on sea level.

The 100 meter number is higher than anybody estimates.

On the other hand it is often said that we are in an in between ice time. So
too much ice is also not good.
And regions in Alaska and Russia as well as green land will become more
