The oldest and simplest motor |
It was steam jets rotating a hollow metal globe. Steam is still man's
greatest energy source. Its turbines that turn are generators.
Spin is always in Bert

Steam is not an energy source.
The energy source is the fossil fuel that heats steam (chemical)
or the nuclear "fuel" in the reactor. Ultimately all energy sources
are from the sun or stars. The oldest motor is the horse or ox.

Windmills and water wheels are simpler than steam.
A hydroelectric plant is an adaptation of the water wheel.
These are becoming ever more popular:

And the sun or the stars have always been there, right.
Good thinking.
Sharp.
As always.

Which in turn convert gravitational potential energy into more

If your big bang were correct there would be no new stars
formed -- but this beyond my reply to Herbie, who isn't all that
bright.

Self propelled is not using a motor. I daresay the dog sled
came earlier, it is easier for a child to bond with a puppy
than something larger than he/she is and grazing animals
do not do well at the edge of the receding ice 11,000 years ago
where survival depended more on intelligence than muscle.
Neolithic man still hunted the bison up until the Winchester
rifle almost made them extinct, along with Neolithic man.
They migrated to Oklahoma under pressure from Europeans
more adapted to cold climes.
I have heard the expression "three dog night", but only
in your part of the world where sleeping with animals
for mutual warmth is apparently still recent, and in one case
I have personal knowledge of, current. Then again, slavery
is also recent in Richmond Va, still in use in 1865 while
James Watt was developing steam power (1765) in Britain
to free the cotton-pickin' niggas 100 years earlier, they'd
still be slaves today without the industrial revolution.
Of course Watt's objective was to pump water from mines
to get at the coal for warmth and make money, so it wasn't
entirely altruistic.

He is right, I have seen that machine demonstated, and steam turbines is

Maybe you should take your own suggestion?
It is an interesting thing in itself what society at that time did not use
these things.
Da Vinchi later had gears, that machine with gears could have moved a lot.

Well violence comes to those too it seems.
As a kid somebody gave me a book on Da Vinci (not the codes), and I found
him clear thinking and inspiring.
This 'property' of being able to connect things across sciences is a good
thing.
And real science and real design and art are strongly related, in fact the
engineer that build the big beautiful bridge is an artist, just a different
brush.

Jan Reality is Sam and I go back many years. Sam has a Google brain, and
has never done any original thinking. He is jealous of me,because I can
think hypothetically. Other than that he is good to his wife. He does
not come home at night. It is possible the oldest motor was a Chinese
water clock,or an undercut water wheel using man power to turn the
blades Bert.

With the rising sea level, you might want to come visit me--even though
I'm on the flat from the last glacier (no glazier), we can easily drive
to the rolling hills less than 20 miles away. Various types of flowers
from Feb. through Oct. too.

Gee Sam, That was a very nice post. Are you mellowing with age.
Chinese engineers knew how to drill down hundreds of feet over 5,000
years ago. Chinese had rockets Must have had some machinery for silk
cloths. The wheel barrel was invented in 1130 AD. Bert

Steam is an energy conveyance, not a source -- unless you're counting
geothermal, and even there it's still not a source; the source is
either Earth formation energy or radioactivity in that particular case.
However, Hero's aeolipile, while little more than a toy, was one of
the first on record prior to sometime in the late 17th or early 18th
century, where devices that were at least contemplated to be useful
started to be built.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_engine
James Watt's innovation apparently was to take the condensor in a vacuum
steam engine into a separate area and therefore keep the steam cylinder
at the right temperature. This was apparently in 1769.

Yes I have seen that too in a TV program.
