this group needs to me moderated |
Just stopped in to take a peek at this group, and
it hit me. The glory days of usenet are loooong over.
The S/N ratio is so high there's no point even looking
for anything interesting to read anymore.
What, between the relativity weenies, the psychotic trolls,
the loons, goons, nuts, cranks and pedants there's nothing
of substance -- just look at this thread sampling...
'The Prience of Wales, a Mini-nuke Design, No. 4'
'Regarding UFO'
'Einstein is Hitler.'
'We shall make matter out of energy'
'New group for bible physics!'
'Proof Martians exist'
' Moses, Physics and the Arc of the Covenant. Physics is War. The Final
Judaic Revolution. Armageddon. The Apocalypse. The Messiah. The God of
the Enslaved and the Global Liberation of the Enslaved.'
'A Time Dilation Observation Flaw' (I can't be the only person utterly
bored with morons arguing about apparent paradoxes wrt. relativity)
I nominate Uncle Al as group moderator.

There are already moderated physics ngs on usenet. And, anyway, it's
healthy to be reminded of how stupid many people are, and of what a
precious gift sanity is.

I agree with you 100%. Unfortunately, to the best of my knowledge
there is no mechanism to convert an existing unmoderated newsgroup to a
moderated one.
Sadly, many other newsgroups have undergone the same fate as
sci.physics thanks to today's nearly unlimited Usenet access by the
unwashed masses! The S/N ratio on some of the "craft" oriented
newsgroups remain readable, but even on these the noise level is
steadily increasing. (Evidently the real wackos are less attracted to
these than to the science hierarchy -- go figure.)
I believe that the only viable solution would be to create a moderated
equivalent of the original sci.physics, say sci.physics.moderated, but
even then the availability of a dedicated moderator or team of
moderators would be problematic because of the time and qualification
such a responsibility would entail.
Given the above, I believe that the future of Usenet is for the most
part predictably bleak. This is evidenced by the fact that good news
servers have already become increasingly rare, with more vanishing each
day.
Is there a solution short of the reincarnation of CANCELBOTS? If there
is, please offer a suggestion.

Yeah, usenet's on its way out.
Scanning some of these thread titles is unbelievable. I feel
like I'm looking at tabloid headlines. It'd be funny if these
people weren't actually serious. It'd be hard to even spoof
or make a satire of a lot of the stuff here as its already hit
rock bottom.
Some of the brighter poeple here seem to have made a sport of
dummy-smacking, but as I far as I'm concerned the novelty wears
off quickly.
You know, there some very good (usually phpBB ? based)
science/physics websites (no names to protect the innocent) where
it's still possible to have a decent discussion. It's a bit more
work than usenet news, but worth it. Most of the brighter poeple
left usenet news some time ago.
Google's a good thing, but google groups was the final nail in the
coffin for usenet news. The floodgates have opened.

There *is* a technical mechanism for doing that, but it doesn't work very
well. The problem is that each news server has to update its information
about which groups are moderated and which ones aren't, when the
moderators of news.announce.newgroups send out instructions to do so.
Once upon a time this worked fairly well, but it doesn't work very well
any more because of lazy or ignorant news server administrators. So the
n.a.n moderators have decided it's best not to try to do this.
Besides, we already *have* a moderated physics newsgroup, namely
sci.physics.research. The name is kind of misleading, because in effect
it's just a moderated version of sci.physics. Postings don't have to
involve actual current research.

About 25 years ago before the great unwashed masses could access
usenet and everyone was either a scientist, engineer, teacher or a
student.
The worst you had to put up with was the occasional loopy student,
but back then you needed at least some minimal talent to get into
college.
Things began to break down when they allowed the "liberal arts" access.

How do you account for the fact
that most of the none physics groups,
other than the groups frequented by teen age boys,
are very civilized.
And how do you account for the fact that
all of the science newsgroups on the Source,
Delphi, CompuServe, Prodigy, AOL, Genie, etc.
were very civilized.
It seems to me that the problem in sci.physics
and the physics related newsgroups started
when John Baez became jealous of
the attention that Sarfatti was getting,
and began to belittle him a few years ago.
After Baez posted, and began to use,
his "crackpot Index" which was aimed at Sarfatti,
Baez became the spiritual leader of the "Attack Pack", and
many hostile, alienated people rallied around Baez
and began to attack folks, and make up web sites,
the sole purpose of which were to demean folks.
Naturally the folks counterattacked,
and after the flame wars started,
many immature people were drawn into
the physics newsgroups to join in the fun.
If Baez would renounce his odious "Crackpot Index",
and detach himself from the "Attack Pack",
the situation in the physics newsgroups
would change overnight.

I just took the time to browse a number of newsgroups,

Although the posters in most of the newsgroups
are more civilized than the posters in sci.physics,
in addition to the newsgroups populated with young boys,
there is also a lot of conflict in the political and religion news groups.
Of course, one would think that people who
frequent and post in a newsgroup like sci.physics
would interact in a more rational, intelligent, civilized way.
And they did, until John Baez began to demean Sarfatti.
It is interesting to see that Sarfatti was enough of a gentleman,
that he just went away rather than engage in a flame war.

1. I assert that when someone,

floats an idea that someone disagrees with,
that rational, intelligent, MORAL folks
do not demean the person.

Hi Dirk
how about nominating you as a moderator??
i would recomend you as one
since you have so much free time to mumble
and you have such a goo dsense of humour
and you are such a bump
and .... what else ? i forgot (:-)
and you know so little physics (whichis a good virtue to a moderator)
so how about it ??

It is interesting to see that Sarfatti was enough of a gentleman,
that he just went away rather than engage in a flame war.
Take the hint Potter--Be a gentleman--Away with you.

The following post from 1992,
gives some indictation of the affect that Baez's "Crackpot Index"
had on the civility and openness in the physics forums.
It is clear that Baez was jealous of Sarfatti,
because of the attention he got from the media,
and probably most importantly, the gals.
The bottom line is,
Sarfatti could get beautiful women,
and Baez could not. (Get any women.)
Thus the Crackpot Index was born.
And lives on with other immature, frustrated, jealous guys,
who can't get beautiful gals.

"Whaddymean it can't be that way?" Feynman
Reply to Baez. I think you mostly post good stuff - with some slips like
crackpot index. Where's your sense of humor about titles? No need for that
"sinking feeling". It's called art John - art. I was conditioned at
Cornell in the 50's by Phil Morrison, C.P. Snow, Vladimir Nabokov - I mix
some satire, literature and poetry with my physics - it called culture.
But I do not understand how you can be so cavelier about the unitarity
issue - you are not seeing the forest but the trees. Yes, loop transforms
ans supermanifolds are interesting but they are pretty far removed from the
really burning issues of physics. You sluff it off as if it is a matter of
little consequence for physics.
If it is really true that standard quantum mechanics allows communication
on the connection - it will be one of the most profound physics discoveries
in the history of the subject - comparable to Newton's mechanics, Maxwell's
equations, second law of thermodynamics, relativity and discovery of the
quantum of action - because it will totally change our idea of the nature
of time and causality.
Now I am not saying that my theory is correct - that's for experiment to
decide (to decide if its false in Popper's sense. But I am making a
definite prediction - control of polarization of light from a distance
including from the future. The math is much more elementary than loop
transforms and supermanifolds. In fact is trigonometry and simple matrix
algebra. Therefore I am at a loss when you say that you cnnot tell if a
matrix whose elements are (11) = 0 , (12) = 1, (21) = 1, (22) = 0 is
unitary or not - that is the matrix for the half-wave plate.
I fail to understand how you could not be interested in this problem since
it is simple and profound and easily tested. I think it shows a real lack
of judgement - and I don't mean to attack you personally - you are not
alone in this. It is a lack of judgement conditioned by the fear of
questioning prejudices and a petty academic arrogance borne of fear and
insecurity that I detested as a graduate student and as a professor of
physics at San Diego State. Men like Einstein, Wheeler, Feynman certainly
do not have that attitude.
The obsession with the "crack pot index" dominating so many postings in
this conference is a kind of creeping censorship- an intolerance for
deviant ideas - form of Mc Carthyism. Many of you use "crackpot" the way
Mc Carthy used "Communist" - and you should be ashamed of yourselves.

Hey Potted, Baez is a respected academic who is welcome at the
Perimeter Institute. Sarfatti is a bottom feeder who is an
amubulatory joke. If you cannot get your genitalia buried in a
willing woman you are beyond hopeless. Look at poon demographics and
zoom in on the drought. Bring on a pair and, when you get tired, let
them finish between themselves.

Sam Wormley makes a good point when he states:
"You harbor much hatred Potter... "
As can be seen by my posts,
I hate closed-minded sociopaths who attack folks,
be their victim, a child, a woman,
or a poster in the newsgroups.
I suggest that Sam is wrong about my web site.
I can't see how a physics tutorial
that starts with events as the basic units of reality,
and goes on in seven, simple, graphic steps,
to develop a unique Physical Properties Chart,
that shows the relationships between the physical properties,
much as the Periodic Chart shows the relationships between the elements
can affront a rational, intelligent student.
Don't take my word for it, and
don't take Sam's word for it.
Visit my site, download the tutorial,
and see for yourself.
