Thorium Oxide - Where could I buy small quantity? |
Hello
I am developing medium pressure mercury lamps and in order to protect
the electrodes and increase its life it is necessary to coat them with
thorium oxide.
In Brazil it is not easy to find this material. Could some one tell me
where could I buy small quantities, in powder, of thorium oxide?
Best Regards,
Marcio Moraes -

Do you need a bottle of powder or a sputter source?
http://www.strem.com/
Strem chemicals
90-3500 ThO2, 10g/$(US)80, 2x25g $(US)319. You might want to calcine
the nitrate.
Electrodes? Why? You'll get huge IR emission. Stick a suitable
amount of mercury in a heavy-walled fused silica tube, pump down, and
flame seal. Put it in a microwave cavity and blast away. Either way,
uou can broaden ad smooth the spectrum by doping with lanthanide
iodides. You increase lamp efficiency by jiggling the Hg isotope
ratio to lessen self-absorption. Photons are expensive - generate
them efficiently (then boast about it to your customers).

Best Regards,

Check periodically on eBay. One particular seller there frequently
offers small quantities of thorium nitrate, which I believe can be
easily converted to thorium oxide. He sells other chemicals as well,
so you may want to contact him directly about the availability of
actual thorium oxide.
Sorry, but I don't have his name or email address immediately
available.
Good luck.

This is a long shot since I do not know the size of your electrodes, try
using some thoriated TIG welding rods.

Are gas mantles still made of Thorium Oxide?

Yes, in developing parts of the world. An ashed gas mantle would still
contain some cerium oxides which might interfere in OP's application
unless he can separate by chemical methods.

In the US at least, most use yttrium oxide now.

Hi Boris!
The electrodes used in curing lamps are mounted with two parts: a rod
and a outer coil, the both made in tungstein. Unfortunatelly I can not
use only thoriated electrodes for TIG because there is not the coil on
them.
Best Regards,
Marcio
