Twelve modes of cognition |
The twelve signs of the zodiac correspond with twelve modes of
cognition. These combine in turn correspond with four faculties for
discerning reality: the ego; the physical senses; the rational mind;
and the psyche. Each group of four is set in threes, on the basis of
association of the cognitive method with a level ever more removed
from one's immediate self. These levels are the immediate
self-centered simplicism of the first four signs; the self-centered
methodologism of the second four signs; and the contextual
methodologism of the last four.
The self-centered cognition identifies primarily with - the self. It
identifies with perceptions that are imparted oneself, through one or
another method. The simplicist takes these perceptions as axiomatic
and presents the world as a function thereof. The simplicist is
centered firmly within the self and takes this self as the basic
reality. The simplicist gives a hoot about the world except whatever
immediately affects its personal experience. The moral and
intellectual codes of the simplicist are projections of its guttural
interest on the world. The world that the simplicist sees is a direct
function of the dominant faculty that exist in his mind; the faculty
that, to him, possesses the most potent and most immediate - reality.
The self-centered methodologist operates from the self, but at a level
removed from the self. The methodologist operates through - a method.
The methodologist is a point, a single point in a multidimensional
space that is its own corner of the universe. The methodologist is
given a method - a code, a logic, a dialectic or an insight - and
applies this method in respect to this base of perceptions to create a
structure at his particular spot of light. The contextual
methodologist identifies with a context of which he is a part. He
applies a particular mental faculty that is his own to identify with
this context and to expand it.
Each level is a break with the previous level. It is also a
fragmentation from the self - from the core reality - and
identification with - the collective. One loses integrity as one
proceeds along the cycle even as one gains perspective. One loses
energy and self-confidence even as one gains experience. One loses
self-centeredness even as one gains collective identification and grip
on bigger reality. This tradeoff is much akin to sunlight percolating
from plasma, to air, to liquid, to solid, or atoms dropping from high-
energy orbits to lower-energy orbits and coagulating into matter. The
most powerful, or most limited, people stay inthe loweststages. Either
the most curious or the weakest move on. This leads to a paradoxical
situatin in which the most powerful people have the least advanced
consciousness and the rest of the world serves them. Otherwise known
as might-makes-right. The situation is remediable by keeping the
enlightened path. The path that retains integrity keeps the lower
levels and moves on to the higher ones by volitional consciousness.
The path that loses integrity moves on as an act of loss.
The evolution from one level to the next always starts with some
participants in the principle either failing or rebelling. Either
losing or winning. Either failing, being defeated, and looking for
alternatives or seeing the shortcomings and bravely forging ahead. It
starts out as a pathological event that is met with hysteria and
hostility and then grows into a principle of its own. Or it starts out
with a vision.
Aries is egocentric simplicism. The world according to Aries is
divided into three categories: That which is good for me; that which
is bad for me; and that which is irrelevant to me. Aries values are a
function of its ability tomake its ego relevant in the world; to beat
up all competition; to make itself the big enchilada; to be the hero.
The core reality of Aries is this: Ego. As such it posseses perfect
integrity and perfect simplicity; a perfect selfhood. The perfect
human being, some would say, one that contains no disfigurement
against its basic aesthetic. The Aries cognitive methodology - whether
it be objectivism or - presents the ego as the basic cosmic reality
and represents the world in terms of its effect upon it. This allows
for a system that is perfectly egocentric; that works specifically to
understand fulfilment of ego and basic needs. Anything that is not
identified with the ego, Aries sees as a digression, a loss , a
failure, a looserhood. But there is a problem. The world. What does
Aries want to be by itself? If unchecked, EVERYTHING. Will everything
be everything? Probably not. That's when some of the losers of Aries
begin to gang up in - societies. And some of the losers of ego begin
to identify with - something else.
That's when Taurus barges into the picture. Taurus the slow and
methodical bull. Taurus the tribe. Taurus the physical matter. Taurus
is existent-based simplicism; the perception of physical world through
physical senses; the examination of the world through these physical
senses and application of mind toward resolving problems as they
affect the world as senses perceive it. Taurus could give a hoot about
ego. It cares about what makes the thing of which ego is a material
manifestation - the Organism - happy. It is a rock that coagulates
when the spark of fire loses steam. It is the world as presented
through physical senses; physical senses that are a property of - the
Organism - and as such are one level removed from the core of self.
The Taurean mind sees the world as objects and deals with it as
objects, checking everything against its physical senses and
representing everything in terms of the image that they present.
Taurus is mind separated into five senses; its methodologism is
separated into objects that are favorable to these five senses and
objects that are not. The difference between Taurus and Aries is that
Taurus does not see the world in terms of itself but in terms of its
physical senses. This removes the center of cognition from the self by
one notch. It also complicates things just one bit, by taking the
center away from the pleasure-pain and giving it to a more complicated
sensory apparatus. The Taurus feels like it has an objective grip on
reality because it discerns it through senses. In fact its grip on
reality is entirely a function of is perceived survivalistic
self-interest and is easiest warped into total irrationality by
threatening this perceived self-interest or the senses. The world
according to Taurus typically does not extend beyond its own backyard.
The universe is not quarks or atoms or mindspace or other such
mumbo-jumbo; it is food in one's mouth and blood on one's gut. If you
wanna make a taurus world crumble, you take away the things that make
its organism happy. The consciousness is self-centered and presented
as senses. This also has a moral dimension that should not be
overlooked. The Taurus that first decided to bolt on Aries had to find
a way to get other Aries to embrace peaceful ways. They did this by
conceiving - morality. Morality is immutable standard, as immutable as
- reality. Reality, of course, of Mom, apple pie and America. It is as
immune from rational challenge as - reality- and as absolutely
essential to one's survival. The mind of the Taurus needs either
morality or reality or a good combination of both. The principles are
as real as objects, and Taurus flings them around like rocks at any
possible - deviant.
The Taurus is a closed system. The world is objects and principles.
Because of the difficult transition from absolute egocentrism of Aries
to its present state, Taurus has a lot of self-righteousness about
being able to dissociate itself from its immediate self and identify
with peaceful existence on a plot of land blathering about Mom apple
pie and America. This self-righteousness, combined with extreme
limitation of its perceptual field to the tiny subset of the world
that it calls reality, creates a mind locked; a mind like a rock; a
mind that won't move and won't lend to scrutiny unless dislodged
absolutely. Then it becomes light. Grows wings. Turns into words.
Grows a brain. Learns to see slightly beyond its self-interest as an
object and identifies with self-interest as a - brain. Gemini is
simplicism on the basis of symbolic representation. Gemini represents
Taurean reality in terms of words - language - mathematical symbols -
and goes inside the head, where symbols have the place of reality, to
understand the world as the mind sees it. To Gemini reality is a sum
of linguistic and symbolic representations of one's experience, as one
works toward solutions of problems within the real world as they
impact one's experience. The Gemini is the mind, and the world exists
through the mind's ability to solve problems - to solve particularly
the problems in "real-world"; the world as it once again directly
impacts one's own experience. This is useful for a level of removal
from reality of the flesh that is necessary to arrive at more
objective solutions than Taurean locked-mindedness would allow. These
symbolisms, and systems that underlie them, constitute reality felt
keenly and absolutely, to the point of causing survival panic and
absolute moral resistance whenever they start to come under attack.
This survival panic is a result of the simple fact that, as a being of
mind, the Gemini uses these symbols to solve survival-related problems
and to orient in the sea of experience. Gemini is the symbolic
loyalist; the culture junkie; the man who accepts as axiomatic the
educational and linguistic training and identifies his self- his
sanity - his reality - with unquestioning perpetuation thereof. The
difference between Gemini and Taurus consists in one further level of
removal from reality afforded by Gemini; a level that allows a more
overarching perspective as well as a greater potential for error; a
level that lends more easily to communication than Aries or Taurus,
but is easiest conditioned by insertion within the mind of linguistic
and educational code and its presentation as one and only reality.
Gemini thinks that it's smart and rational. Gemini thinks that its
symbols describe - everything. Gemini is guturally hateful to
innovative uses of language and symbolism that reveal places in which
the memetic complex fails to describe reality, enough to demonize
those who would employ such self-honesty as heretics or worse. Gemini
is as loyal to its code as Taurus is to its property and its
principles; dogmatically so - hatefully so - mind-killingly so - in a
way that arouses people into mass hysteria; a phenomenon that is
associated mostly with Taurus and Virgo but really require Gemini's
dogmatism and communication skills in ordr to spread. And yet it keeps
finding the same symbolism that did wonders at first to come up
eventually - unfulfilling. An apple is an apple and a girl is a girl,
but for one or another stupid reason there is a huge difference
between a soft warm cuddly delectable girl who offers spiritual
blending and a dried-out meme-filled rationalist who clobbers one on
one's head with dogma each time one begins to speak. So some people
begin to decide that maybe the symbolic context in which the rational
mind works is inadequate for discerning all of - reality. This causes
survival panic in the mind and contempt for the people who would
advocate such a ridiculous possibility. The more hysterical and
removed from reality the supposed rationalists get, the more they
themselves in spite of their rigidly cultivated pretense of rational
motivation look like something other than rational in their actions.
And then a different level of cognition begins to make itself visible;
a level of emotions. A level of psyche. A level of inner reality that
is attuned to the other as it is attuned to the self.
Cancer is emotional simplicism. Cancer sees the world in terms of its
emotions. These, in turn, consummate the preceding three states: for
after all an emotion can be evoked by - an ego stimulus, a physical
stimulus, a symbolic stimulus or an emotion. The emotions of Cancer
are its subjective reality; its mode of orienting; its inner state.
Something is good if it makes it feel good inside, something is bad if
it makes it feel bad inside. This constitutes the next level of
removal from immediacy than Gemini, from rational mind into the
psyche. It also opens a whole dimension of human experience even as it
consummates the preceding three faculties. One can feel good by
fulfilling his ego; one can feel good by becoming wealthy; one can
feel good by solving a problem; or one can feel good by experiencing
affection for or of another person. Seeing the world in this way, and
living values that make the best of emotions, does wonders for the
psyches mangled by gemini memetic-infestationism. It does wonders for
the heart. The hearts glow, caring spreads, everyone gets mushy and
emotional and romantic. People get nice, sweet, even healthy. But the
more the emotional bonds spread between people the more they find them
strangulating rather than heart-warming. People tend to get fat,
communitarian, manipulative, sedate, much like cattle. This does not
sit well by something or other within the psyche. Sure I can nurture
you but .. For how long until you turn into a blob of *****? So some
begin, to the horror of many, to rediscover - the self. Because the
self has a bad name, however, it has to do morph into something else.
Something strong. Noble. Arousing. Something that consummates the
advancements of these three stages. Something that can rouse people's
emotions toward - a common cause, common purpose. Something glorious
to stir the emotions off of their swamp and toward something like
progress.
Time to introduce - something else. Something that has existence
outside the reality of any individual mind. Something that has reality
that is objective and with which everyone can identify. Something that
steps outside of the individual mind and lets the individual minds
work together on a synthesis to make it relevant to their lives - and
make themselves relevant to it. The process starts with Leo. The only
thing that will get the people emotionally stirred enough out of their
minds to see the world from a perspective that's not their own. A
perspective like, say, the ego of the Leo. An ego so glorious, so
imposing or so overbearing that the individual can't help but to
identify with it rather than with themselves. The ego of - a
civilization. The ego of a society. The ego of a king who has
life-or-death power over you. The galvanizing, the spectacular, the
stirring, the pompous, the overbearing. Progress. Religion. Conquest
of savages. The consummation of every ego. The enlightened solution.
That which live people's dreams. The luminous sun that shines
love-light forever. The common purpose. The method that appeals to
every ego. This becomes the method and the logic; this becomes the
goal and the avatar. That which takes all emotions of people - their
love, their fear, their resentment, their aspirations - and gives them
a name, a purpose and an association with a common goal. The method is
this; Make the best of everyone. Make everyone happy. Sublimation of
emotions to art; to purpose; to spark of creative fire and common
identity. Emergence out of common wetness of self-creative phoenix
fire. Even while making the Leo a centerless but entirely full-
of-self being sitting at the center and radiating its wisdom toward
everyone. Leo is methodologist of the ego, the one who steps outside
of his ego and reaches out to other people's emotions and places them
under his ego. Which becomes the collective identity. The common fire.
On which all other structures of social synthesis rest.
The shortcoming of this method is the same as that of Aries. Leo just
wants to expand. This is imbalanced and has to be checked against
objective reality. In the same way as Leo consummates egos into a
synthesis, Virgo consummates the physical needs. Virgo takes as
axiomatic a system of thought - a mode of cognition - a principle -
and makes that it its basic mode of discerning reality. The Virgo
method is based on cause-and-effect as it is applied to describing and
shaping reality. Virgo is a professional who applies - logic,
morals,etc-toward seeing the world and representing it as function of
its dogmas., The world becomes seen as a function its ability to fit
into its method. When something deviates from the method, it obviously
is unreal. When someone does not abide by the method, he obviously is
irresponsible and insane. This pseudo-realism of Virgo becomes
self-reinforcing and keeps everyone running in self-fulfilling
patterns. This ensures its demise as cornerstone of supposed realism
and supposed rationalitythat ignores the mind's role in shaping
reality and ignores any other possibilities that people can manifest
if they begin to apply themselves toward shaping the world, not into
ever more rigid permutations of what it is,but more into how it should
be. Enter Libra. The idealist. The dreamweaver. The artist of the
spirit.
Libra is the objective analyst. Libra integrates minds. Libra sees the
world in terms of objective synthesis of components with eye of making
the best of all. Unlike gemini, Libra does not stick to one
intellectual code but rather chooses among intellectual codes in order
to build a best system of applied intelligence in any particular
situation. Libra seeks to consummate; to refine; to weave toward
quality; a dialectic that accepts as axiomatic all that is given and
by carefully balancing it against its opposite creating a consummation
of both; a projection of an ideal; an inculcation of an ideal of how
life should be. Libra integrates through compassion and intellect and
then puts out a balanced and delicate synthesis. Libra projects an
ideal of how life should be, on the basis of intelligent analysis of
all components - analysis whose purpose is to make the best of
everything. The Libra method of cognition that is the dialectic is a
natural evolution from Virgo's cause-and-effect logic; a method whose
purpose is to consummate and to complete; not to produce ever more
similar forms of the same matter but to rise toward quality. The
shortcoming of this method is that it is utterly uninsightful and
consummates with its structures many things that have no right to
being woven into quality. There is hypocrisy inherent in such a
method. Enter Scorpio.
Scorpio is psychological insight. Scorpio looks at things as they
affect its psyche - checks things at their premises. Its method is
this: Checking the cognitive method for its emotional and
psychological truthfulness. Checking for emotional truthfulness at the
root. This is the natural evolution after Libra, whose dialectical
method consummates all that stands underneath it through an act of
synthesis - but which does not by itself have the capacity for
understanding whether or not the thing on which they are building has
any actual validity in human world. The Scorpio is a free radical that
swims in the medium and clears it of dendritis; that subverts the
social dialectic that is the civilization, or clears it of poison,
depending upon its purpose and intent. The Scorpio is a filter, a
sieve, a check of how things human affect - human psyche. The Scorpio
checks everything against this psychic reality. The difference between
one person's psychic reality and the next one, and Scorpio's absolute
rootedness in theirs, creates a constant battling of psyches as to
which reality is most valid. Time for the next level up. A mode of
cognition that transcends the self altogether and places the mind in
something other than the self.
The systematizers form the next level of removal from self; a
cognition that has no reliance on the self whatsoever and identifies
instead with a context. A civilization. A philosophy. A system. A
global mind. The universe. Self-interest does not play the part in the
cognitive processes of this level at all. Far rather, self-interest
expresses itself sideways: in systems that serve one's purposes, in
systems that serve oneself, in systems that take the contents of one's
own psyche and project them upon the universe, thereupon to force the
entirety of the civilization to live by a mindset suitable to -
oneself.
Sagittarius is the contextual synthesis in terms of the ego.
Sagitarrius is the expressed dogma - the expressed purpose - the
expressed tradition. Sagittarius is the stated objectives of the
civilization. A wisdom - known to be wisdom because it makes people
feel smug; because it works at the ego level and makes ego feel wise
and open. A wisdom that consummates what made everyone's egos happy
through time and tradition and on the basis of this ego feeling - on
the basis of ability to strengthen or understand the ego - creates - a
philosophy. A guiding standard. A wisdom. A context. A tradition from
which all ego- motivated individuals can draw inspiration, coming from
others who have ever preceded them. Sagittarian method of cognition is
that of placing everything through the lens of a philosophy - seeing
everything in the context - that is the stated reality of the
civilization. Sagittarius identifies with the context and hopes to
complete it. This makes him wise. For a while. Until he begins to meet
the scrutiny of objective reality.
Capricorn is contextual syntesis applied to physical or social
reality. Capricorn is the engineer; the architect; the social
synthesizer; the weaver of social context. Capricorn sees the context
of - the civilization. The system. With the eye on lasting stability
and perpetuation. With an eye on providing for material and social
fulfilment. With an eye on developing a lasting place to live and a
lasting civlization. To a Capricorn everything has its proper place,
and everything is measured by standard of relation to its structural
context. Everything is measured by its lasting, survival-providing,
quality. Everything is measured by usefulness to - the civilization.
The goal is to become the person who gets to decide what and who is
useful and where the civilization is going. To become the system. TO
become the mastermind and the architect. To structure the
civilization. To make it real. To make it last. To leave a lasting
blueprint. To let his character, his mind and his perception go the
greatest lengths to shaping social reality. To be an engineer of the
context and give everyone a proper place. Then keep them there and
bash them if they dare to deviate. Which makes mind unhappy. And the
Individual.
Aquarius is contextual synthesis of the mind. Aquarius incorporates
all the knowledge that has been passed down through the civilization
into a system of learning; a cognitive blueprint; an academia.
Aquarius represents the world in terms of its system of learning and
sees everything as an extrapolation upon this system of learning. As
such Aquarius is free - free to fly; free to see; free by virtue of
being associated entirely with an objective context that sees the
world from a bird's eye view. Free to invent. Free to entertain ideals
and set right injustices. Free and completely detached from the self.
Aquarius identifies with the intellectual system and presents the
world on its basis. As such it becomes the next innovation. The next
imprint. That which has the quiet arrogance of something that has
consummated a context and is able to produce - the next futuristic
improvement. Each aquarius feels this entitlement. Each aquarius,
dissociated from human emotions. They fight each other. They argue.
They fly into each other. They run into a reality check. Of what is
true. Of what is true in absolute sense. Of what transcends the mind -
of what the mind inhabits and tries to approximate. Of the universe.
And this is the end of the road.
Pisces is context. Simply context. The medium in which the minds swim.
The Piscean mind identifies with the emotional-psychic context of a
civilization. The Pisces is simply psychic - simply empathic - and has
no self of its own. It identifies with - the world. Pisces
accomplished is mind that is one with the universe. The meditating
mind. The mind of God. This represents a complete evolution out of
self and an end of the cycle. At which point it's time to be back to
some good old-fashioned stupid Arian selfishness as subconsciously
informed by the innovations of this spiral.
