By naming 'human beings' the issue becomes - what is a human being that
other non-human being DNA machines are not.
I understand that a human being is a class of 'great apes' including
all of the different forms of humans today, and many forms of human
being now extinct.
Other people have religious and political agendas against that. But -

This is mostly semantics. So the answer is too.
Humans are not machines, pretty much because in all of human history,
before right now, we could not make machines that were like being what
we are.
We are now starting to make machines like we are. So, with the new
machines, best called 'artificial intelligence' we are like machines
again, that being artificial intelligent machines.
Before today, we had simple machines. They are simple, because they
lacked what is called 'emergent function'.
We discovered emergent function, studying simple animal life, to figure
out how to make artifiical intelligence. AI began with trying to make
systems 'complex enough' to replicate intelligence. But it failed. So
they studied simple life.
What they found was, a system of 'simple rules' explains things like
insects. A spider makes a web, but does not think or know engineering.
Bees are very amazing, but they do not think either. The queen is not a
leader. They have no leaders. They have no thought. But they do have a
list of simple rules they follow.
When you have the right package of simple rules, and really more
importantly, a large number of little creatures, each with these simple
rules, something really amazing starts to happen. 'Emergent function'.
Like the saying, 'more than the sum of its parts'
So, you can make lots of little worker robots. Each robot is brainless,
and just has a package of simple rules it will follow. But - when all
the little robots, following all the simple rules, work together - you
end up with artificial intelligence, no rule dictates that final
outcome. It is a collective outcome - the final sum of many many
interacting simple parts.
Thus a human being. Though a DNA machine, human minds are an emergent
outcome, of the uncountable little simple rule actions of of our bodies
and minds.
What AI research taught us, was not that 'machines can be alive and
intelligent' but rather that - our 'fantasy' that we are alive and
intelligent is just that, a fantasy. We are already, emergent from a
simple rule system.
So, we are far more than any pitiful pre-AI machine system. As we are
emergent beings and they are not.
But, as AI machines are now entering emergent function, we are like
those machines.
It will take centuries for people at large to be able to deal with any
of this. After all, they are still stuck in religion and creationism.
They cant even let go of that ritual of 'self importance' Asking them
to accept they are not really alive, and just a walking talking bee
hive - a really cool self contained invidual not really much different
than a colony of army ants - is of course impossible.
