What shape is the universe? |
Let's say a mother has two babies on a space ship going 99.9999% the
speed of light relative to the Earth. The universe is 100,000,000,000
light years. People have developed the technology to live over 100,000
years. Then, all of a sudden, one of the siblings departs back to
Earth, while the other one takes a speed pod going 99.9999% the speed
of light relative to the space ship in the space ship's frame of
reference. When the speed pod passes Earth, how old will the Earth
bound twin be and how old will the twin in the speed pod be?

The problem with answering this is, in part, based on the fact you have set
the geometry of the universe - which means that you are best placed to come
up with the answer.
Also, when you say the universe is 1x10^11 ly - do you mean away from Earth?
In every direction? Does it loop back upon itself (like the ancient computer
game analogy) or is the "edge" an actual edge? I assume your spacecraft
instantly accelerates to .999999c and instantly stops, otherwise you will
have to take that into account.
Other than that, it is a simple matter of transforms unless I have missed
something deeper in your post.

| Title: _Minor_ details. |
02 Apr 2006 12:25:59 AM |
|
|
Hi Starbles, You asked about twins and time dilation.
Suppose I met up with you one day and I hopped into my spacecraft
hovered above you and accelerated myself to the speed of light,
firing my thrusters to maintain a low orbit despite my great velocity.
Sure, it's absurd, not only would the infinite accelerations
require more energy than exists in the cosmos... I'd be instantly vaporized.
Anywho... ignoring such _Minor_ details, suppose that fifty years later,
with you still in the same spot, posting to Sci.Physics,
I terminated my orbit and descended to meet you.
I would've experienced almost no proper time compared to your 50 years.
You asked:
What shape is the universe ?
...
What affect will the shape of the universe have on how old the twin is
when the twin passes the other twin ?
As Hawking says, the cosmos likely has no beginning or end.
The universe has just always been dissipating, I posit,
and entropy is the measure of cosmic time, Space_Time_Entropy.
The 5D shape of the cosmos, Space_Time_Entropy,
can be imagined as a 2D hyperbola
or a 3D horn with an infinitely long mouthpiece and flange.
Because the cosmos has no center of gravity, it's 4D shape, i.e. Space_Time,
-- not 3D Space or 5D Space_Time_Entropy, mind you --,
is flat, like a straight 2D line.
WMAP has pinned down how much dark energy there is within a 5 percent error,
and it's March 17th data shows only polerizations
from dissipation, and not from the gravity waves you'd expect to see
if, absurdly, our entire cosmos had popped into existence
in a thrillionth of a second... along with pigs flying out of my *****, ha ha.
SNLS's prelimiary data, released November 22nd,
tells us that dark energy is, in fact,
General_Relativity's cosmological constant, lambda.
With only 10 percent of the expected data, and a 10 percent margin of error,
lambda is appears to be quite constant for the last 12 billion years or so.
Like many others, I expect that lambda to be perfectly constant,
going back forever, but a WMAP-like satellite looking at standard candles
would really help support that postulate.
Because gravitational time dilation is a function of the escape velocity,
I posit that things are actually traveling that fast there,
but in a cyclical fashion, and in more dimensions.
Ingoring General_Relativity's Cosmological_Constant for the moment,
gravitational acceleration is a function of the density of mass-energy
and one's proximity to it.
But density is what's left-over from the notional start of the big bang,
that's where gravity came from, and where it's going.
The net mass-energy of the cosmos is known to be _Negative_,
a.k.a. General_Relativity's lambda, a.k.a. GR's cosmological _Constant_,
a.k.a. dark energy, a.k.a. negative pressure... etc.
It takes energy to maintain a vacuum... it's an energy consumer.
e=mcc means: Negative_Pressure = Negative_Energy
Hence, vacuums are gravitationally repulsive and
a perfect vacuum would consume all the energy in the cosmos, and then some.
Likewise, infinite density equates to infinite acceleration,
and, therefore, infinite Unruh radiation,
....emitting more energy than currently exists in the cosmos, and then some.
While the spin of the earth and it's path around the sun are well known,
a priori, the spin of a photon and its path are _Never_ fully known,
even after it's, ahem, measured.
So... The key to understanding cosmology and TOEs is noting that
nothing is intrinsically random; instead, some things are simply unknown,
given _Today_'s best observations/theories.

Loath though I am to get drawn into your insanities, what frame of reference
do you use to determine proper time?
Which frame of reference is used to determine when the 50 years have passed?
As Hawking says, the cosmos likely has no beginning or end.
When did he say this?
The universe has just always been dissipating, I posit,
You are wrong, I posit.

Nope, but then I am not a biologist so cutting a flea open isn't really
something I am going to do on a daily basis.
You on the other hand, repeatedly post to a physics newsgroup yet have never

Hi Eric_Gisse, I hate kids.
My efforts to help Patinha brought me nothing but pain.
My checking account could be frozen at any time, my lawyers tell me.
My rent was raised from 250 USD per month in a nicer place,
with more reliable broadband, -- provided free by a _Good_ friend of mine --,
to 400 dollars per month in one of Seattle's worse crack houses,
....complete with crack smokers/dealers guarding the doors,
filthy rugs/bathrooms, people getting thrashed on,
and barely working plumbing and wiring.
People are opening my mail, for God's sake.
I kicked Ethen out again yesterday,
he thinks he's too good for common labor so he mooches off me
and steals for an array of drugs, including crack, meth and heroin.
My new landlord, who cashed a three thousand dollar check from me,
is evicting people left and right,
so I don't want to be found harboring a bunch of thieving junkies.
When Patinha first moved in, sometime before September,
she was very high, schizophrenic, suicidal and homicidal.
By the time she left for rehab in L.A., she was a total darling,
mostly off drugs, planning on going to college in the fall, etc.
I'd help more people like that... if I could afford it.

How is this physics?
I take great pride in my sobriety,
Shame you are insane then isnt it?
and my controlled consumption of food, money and fuel.
Money is _Not_ how I keep score.
What is your obsession with scores and "winning or losing." You need to
"sane-up" a bit and realise you are not competing with anyone.
If you were, the bad news is you have already lost.

Hi T_Wake,
Over a span of a few hours, you made 16 direct replies to my posts.
And, no matter how bad you're hallucinating today, I must inform you that
nothing you wrote was even remotely on-topic for this newsgroup.
So why don't you give it rest ?

Just think how many pointless posts does that mean you have made? At least
32....

Jeff, you have said this hundreds of times. Does it make you feel better?
Do the voices in your head stop shouting when you keep posting this?
You have nothing of value to say, but you keep on saying it...

Good thing you don't, because if you were you would be losing.
Why again were you babbling about me being "unemployed" earlier even
though I am clearly a student? Oh thats right, you are a moron. I was
confused there for a minute.

Hi Eric_Gisse, In what way are you, as you say, clearly a student ?
Looking up your IP address, 137.229.61.79, using Arin.NET,
the American_Registry_for_Internet_Numbers shows Alaska.EDU, Fairbanks, AK,
but I'd hardly say that's obvious in any way,
....who takes the time to look that ***** up ?
The lack of content in your life and mind is well documented here.
Any fool who bothers to look at your posting history is soon well aware of it.

Gosh. What could it POSSIBLY mean when someone is posting from a
university?
Oh the possibilities!
You are apparently not so stupid that you can't do a reverse DNS but
you are capable of completely missing the obvious possibility that I
am, as I said, a student.
The lack of content in your life and mind is well documented here.

My posting history says I enjoy harassing fools. Your posting history
indicates that you are one of those fools I harass.

Seems pretty reasonable to me :-)
