Why is copper a good conductor but a poor magnet ? |
Why is Copper an excellent conductor but a poor magnet
and why is iron a mediocre conductor but an excellent magnet.
" When a length of metal, such as copper, is heated at one end,
electrons tend to move away from the hot end toward the cooler end.
This is true of most metals. However, in some metals, such as iron, the
opposite takes place and electrons tend to move TOWARD the hot end. "
is this significant in explaining why copper is conductive and iron is
magnetic ?

Electrical conductivity is determined by electrons that are free to move
around. Magnetism is determined by the alignment of all of the electrons
in the material. Electrons don't need to move through the bulk material
for their spins to point in the same direction.

Perhaps it has to do with how the atoms are constructed. You know,
the number of shells involved. Perhaps that helps to determine a
medium's ability to retain magnetic influences.
There are many matrices that are very easily influenced by
magnetic fields, but unless the medium can retain an orientation
(magnetic permeability), it will not exhibit a strong unilaterally
aligned field which would exhibit notable "magnetism".

..
ctrl ] to exit the telnet session.
So, usenet was orininally a text based (and still is actually) service,
that allowed ANY user wit ha termional to acces the articles, the protocol
is 100% ASCII.
You can type
help
once connected to a NNTP server (on port 119).
This assumes of cause you run Linux or some Unix variant, it is completely
possible a Billy the Gates telnet product will require you to move the mouse and
fill in some GUI crap.
