Will the LHC kill us all? |
If you can get BBC2 watch out for Horizon tonight. Some TV Guide
listings are saying that it might produce a black hole that could
swallow the earth:
http://www.321books.co.uk/tvguide/tuesdaynight.htm
Any thoughts?

I really wish folks would stop bringing that idiotic argument up.

Yup. "Never look at TV Guide listings for reliable science."

So far, cosmic rays of far greater energy than the particles in the LHC
have failed to destroy the moon etc.

The fact that this hasn't happened is proof that string theory is a bunch of
mathematical hot air and misdirection.

I don't know why you would say that. As far as I know, string theory
has not said anything about the LHC creating a black hole that would
swallow the world. Apparently TV Guide has, but I don't think the good
folks at TV Guide represent the state of the art of string theory.

1) Angular momentum is conserved. A microscopic black hole can't
swallow anything signficant/time.
2) Given the maximum possible mass of the created black hole,
calculate its maximum possible lifetime,
T=(M/Ms)x10^66 years
where M = black hole mass and Ms = solar mass.
T=(M^3)/3K
where K = (hc^4)/(30720)G^2(pi)^2 Use consistent units.
http://library.thinkquest.org/C007571/english/advance/core8.htm
Where can it travel in that time interval, git? Nowhere.
3) Idiot.

Sam You are wrong. Reality is the stars that are the largest stars in
the universe dominate our sky. They have a mass 100 times greater than
the Sun,and last only one-thousandth as long. We call these massive
stars "Blue Supergiants" We have one just 20,000LY from us. Its called
"Sher 25" and is in the constellation Carina(I'm looking at a picture of
it as I 'm typing) Astronomers agree that this Sher 25 is about to
explode. Sam This begs the question "Is 20,000 LY far enough away for
us to be safe? I predict in the future astronomers will be able to
predict a supernova explosion. Bert.

Sam the size of the explosion and the particle speed, and their weight
will equal the force \thrown to us. Sad part is this radiation can do
its damage in the tiny micro level, Just cause radiation damage to our
cells. Bert
