Tell me, ..why are you such a *****?
SOMETHING has to causing volcanoes and earthquakes, doesn't it?
The sea floor spreads at the mid-Atlantic ridge and at other places,
pushes the plates apart and they crumple up into fucking great
mountains where they join other plates, leaving the Earth one size,
notably the Andes, the Himalayas and the Alps.
You are so full of ***** your eyes are brown, you fucking ignoramus.

That was the arsehole Schaefer who made the request, he didn't like me
saying
Einstein's third premise was:
"Die letztere Zeit kann nun definiert werden, indem man durch Definition
festsetzt, daß die "Zeit", welche das Licht braucht, um von A nach B zu
gelangen, gleich ist der "Zeit", welche es braucht, um von B nach A zu
gelangen. "
which translates into English as
"We have not defined a common "time" for A and B, for the latter cannot be
defined at all unless we establish by definition that the "time" required by
light to travel from A to B equals the "time" it requires to travel from B
to A.
If anyone wishes to make a comment they can say I'm impolite and I'm rude to
fuckheads, but I'm RIGHT! Hillman, Schaefer and Connolley are fuckheads.

| Oh! Who said it? "I Kant"!
Thank you. It would be betray a lamentable degree of irremediable want
to claim it as your own :)
A perfect exemplar of Kant's words is the guy that uttered these pearls
of wisdom:
"This is PHYSICS, not math or logic, and "proof" is completely irrelevant."
"This is PHYSICS, not theology."
"Yes, tests of strong fields are few and far between, but there are
some:
the binary pulsars, and observations of accretion disks near black
holes"
"Imagine a train leaving one city at 12:00 and arriving in a city 60
miles to its west at 12:01. Do you really think that train traveled
3,600 miles per hour? Of course not! This example used two _different_
coordinate systems for "time", the two timezones of those two cities. To
obtain the speed you _must_ use a single coordinate system; then you'll
realize it traveled just under 60 miles per hour."

"Yes, tests of strong fields are few and far between, but there are
some:
the binary pulsars, and observations of accretion disks near black
holes
`I don't know what you mean by "observations",' Alice said.
Humpty Roberts smiled contemptuously. `Of course you don't -- till I tell
you.
I meant "there's a nice knock-down argument for you!"' <shrug>
`But "observations" doesn't mean "a nice knock-down argument",' Alice
objected.
`When I use a word,' Humpty Roberts said, in rather a scornful tone,
<shrug>,
`it means just what I choose it to mean -- neither more nor less.' <shrug>
`The question is,' said Alice, `whether you can make words mean so many
different things.'
`The question is,' said Humpty Roberts, `which is to be master -- that's
all.' <shrug>
Alice was too much puzzled to say anything; so after a minute Humpty Roberts
began again. `They've a temper, some of them -- particularly verbs: they're
the proudest -- adjectives you can do anything with, but not verbs --
however,
I can manage the whole lot of them! Impenetrability! That's what I say!'
<shrug>
"And you never responded to how a 2-d surface in a flat 4-d spacetime can
have nonzero curvature, and why that shows that the curvature of such
2-d surfaces is useless in "describing" the geometry of the 4-d
manifold...." he
droned on.
"If you say that the curvature of 2-d surfaces is useless in
"describing" the geometry of the 4-d manifold....I am willing to agree
with you. But I just wanted you people to help me visualize the
intrinsic curvature of 3-d Schw. space. I was told that the Gaussian
curvature of certain 2-d surfaces will represent the intrinsic
curvature of 3-d Schw. space. When I wanted these 2-d surfaces to be
identified, Jan PB had given some interesting suggestions. But now you
say it is *useless*....." said Alice.
"_SOME_ 2-d surfaces can be useful in describing the geometry of 4-d
spacetime, in particular those spanned by a 2-d vector space of
geodesics. But you were discussing 2-d surfaces defined by coordinates,
and _those_ are useless because coordinates are completely arbitrary,
and introducing that arbitrariness destroys their usefulness" replied Humpty
Roberts.
"That means the notion of intrinsic curvature of space is either too
complex that it cannot be visualized or it is just invalid." exclaimed
Alice.
"No. But in many cases using a ball of dust particles is a better
visualization tool than 2-d surfaces.", said Humpty Roberts, teetering
on his wall.
"Mathematically it is good enough to state that in Riemannian geometry
the Riemann tensor is non-zero. Where is the necessity of associating
it with a cooked up fictitious term 'curvature of space'? " asked Alice,
thinking of the cooked up egg she had for breakfast.
"Mathematicians and physicists are human. We share the common desire to
communicate with each other easily, accurately, and concisely -- that's
why technical vocabularies were invented." said Humpty Roberts scornfully
and pretending he is human by saying "we".
Alice pondered this for moment, then asked "Was it required to fool and
mislead the 'layman'?"
"Your problem, not mine", said Humpty Roberts, then realizing his
Freudian slip, he was pretending to be human, added "(ours).
But this technical vocabulary is not secret or unfathomable, it just
takes _STUDY_. <shrug>"
Alice then went back to say "The term *curvature* basically applies to
the bending of curves and 2-d surfaces."
Ho ho, thought Humpty Roberts, "Not in differential geometry or GR.
The term "curvature" was borrowed by analogy with 2-d surfaces, and
has come to mean the Riemann curvature tensor. That is, a manifold of
_any_ dimension with nonzero Riemann tensor is said to be curved."
and he shrugged like this :- "<shrug>"
Alice asked "Why *said* to be curved when it is actually not curved?"
Humpty Roberts let out a great sigh.
" <sigh>", he said.

This is a typical Don Findlay response. I think the University of Glascow
should investigate his very unprofessional conduct, and take his degree
away from him (if that is even possible at this point). He is certainly
too incompetent in his field for anyone to take him seriously. At the
least, the geology department there should publish a statement divorcing
themselves completely from this lunatic. Something like "yeah, he
graduated here, but he only got his degree because he was in the department
so long that we just had to graduate him in order to get rid of him" I
think would be appropriate.

| This is a typical Don Findlay response. I think the University of Glascow
| should investigate his very unprofessional conduct, and take his degree
| away from him (if that is even possible at this point). He is certainly
| too incompetent in his field for anyone to take him seriously. At the
| least, the geology department there should publish a statement divorcing

department

The problem with academia is Catch 22. If too few gain a qualification
that is seen as the fault of the educator, not the student, the college then
gets fewer applicants, not enough funding and the better educators move
on to greener pastures. Standards are lowered, more people are "qualified"
and this then becomes a "good" school to send young students to
"pass" exams and gain degrees, thus providing positive feedback of
greater stupidity. So "yeah, he graduated here, send us some more like
him, we'll graduate anyone for a fee".
The guy with a 40% passing grade is 60% wrong.
A large part of that problem is democracy, we tire of the idiots we
put in power and vote in the opposition to oust them, anyone that
shakes hands and kisses babies will do so long as he has a lot of
money to back him. In a world where everyone has their own
uninformed opinion only chaos can result whe nthose opinions
are acted upon, but the alternatives are to horrific to contemplate,
we do not wish a return to dictatorship.
If Findlay doesn't like Plate Techtonics, what does he expect us to
do about it? Tell geologists they are wrong without listening to
them also? That is not going to happen.
I have no solution to offer, save the restructuring of democracy
whereby no single party can have more than a 33% share of
decision making, compelling each party to court the vote of others.
The Findlays of this world need to be heard in the event that they
have a valid point, but rejected when they do not. These newsgroups
provide some of that service. One hopes Findlay will see his own
shortcomings, but even if not he isn't going to get anywhere.
His writing is amusing, but that's all.

If Findlay doesn't like Plate Techtonics, what does he expect us to
do about it? Tell geologists they are wrong without listening to
them also? That is not going to happen.

You've been listening to them for the last half century. Well,
...hearing them. You couldn't have been listening very hard. How old
was Barabbas before you sussed *him out? Or do you get the feeling
others are not listening at all? ( And why should they? ..when you're
such a ***** and you know they don't listen to shitheads. Thank
christ shitheads don't amount to more than 30% of the population, or
where would we be? What about the Shitheads that took people into
Iraq, and refuse to listen to the reason why bombers blow themselves
up.

I have no solution to offer, save the restructuring of democracy

decision making, compelling each party to court the vote of others.
The Findlays of this world need to be heard in the event that they

Validity will be forced by the science, but more on the expediency that
derives therefrom, ..but so long as 'scientists' are content to sit on
the George, and have the likes of Stu wipe their bums with Christmas
Gift, it will be a long time coming - another century perhaps. Plate
Tectonics is looking for a way forward, even if the likes of the George

managed to get through to the right people on the phone. One of these days
their Ladyships will want to go down there for a day or two and I'll be
able to check the records for myself), and did it at the time that he

some of Don's fear of PT may have been considered as open questions at the
time of his studenthood. On that basis, I'm afraid that there's no good
grounds for taking away the *record* of his academic achievement (which is
all that a degree is, after all). Sorry George, but that's not going to
work.
If Don were a member of a professional society, then he'd certainly
be laying himself open to a case of "bringing the profession into
disrepute" ; but he obviously doesn't care about that.

IF Don's claimed qualifications are valid (which may or may not be
true - I make no assertion one way or the other until I've checked the
records myself, or found someone who I've confidence in to do it for me),
then we're just going to have to accept the fact that someone with
non-trivial geological education has some particularly bizarre ideas. Mind
you, since one of my classmates was a member of some Xtian sect that
required biblical inerrancy (and thus a 6-day time frame for geological
history), this doesn't come as a gut-wrenching idea to me. The last I
heard of that guy he was doing hydrogeology in Englandshire somewhere.
Probably squared circles in the (very narrow) margins of his bible at
lunch.

Hey, Tom Gold wasn't a fool. Despite his "Deep Hot Biosphere"
ideas. Ditto for Fred Hoyle, panspermia and public-school flu outbreaks.
Even intelligent people can have some pretty silly ideas at times. (Not
that I think that Don Findlay is noticeably intelligent, in this forum.)
Uggh, defending Findlay. I must go and sandpaper my hard drive
