Jobless figure drops but Labor Dept. sez there may be sumthin' wrong with its numbers |
A spokesman for the department said he could not point to any special
factors to account for the big drop in claims last week, but said
problems with seasonally adjusting the data could be a factor.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) --
The number of Americans filing first-time claims for jobless benefits
took an unexpectedly sharp plunge last week, reaching a level not seen
since before the economy tumbled into recession in 2001, the Labor
Department said Thursday.

Nobody has to "Dress Down" anything as the "Plain Old Truth" that you
try to gloss over with your Bull ***** is bad enough!
The plain fact is that to just break even on jobs this country has to
have a net growth of 150,000 new jobs per month! And not just the
68,000 (assuming that is they do not once again revise this weekly
figure of jobless claims back up as they have done the last few months
straight on these weekly figures) new jobs this last weekly report
hints that were created in total this month which (in case you have
not done the math) says as plain as daylight that we are still 82,000
jobs below the break even point.
BTW this pitiful job gain happened in the middle of a 3rd Quarter 7.2%
surge, a figure that No Bod Dee expects to be repeated as even the
Whitehouse has since come out with its own warnings of drastically
lower GDP numbers as they know full well that this 7.2% figure was
almost all due to increased defense spending and the fact that in the
3rd quarter all the tax rebates came into play.
In fact to give you some idea of how much this country is hurting for
jobs if you start this month the economy would have to create nearly
500,000 new jobs per month just to dig us out of the hole Dubya put
this country in!!!

WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- Layoff announcements from U.S. companies more
than doubled in October to 171,874, the highest in a year, according
to the monthly tally released Tuesday by outplacement firm Challenger
Gray & Christmas. October is typically the largest month for layoff
notices, as companies slash costs at the end of the fiscal year. The
Challenger survey is not adjusted for seasonal factors. Layoff
announcements had fallen for three months in a row before October's
125 percent increase. In October, the auto industry sacked 28,363
workers, followed by 21,169 in the retail sector. Telecommunications
companies cut 21,030. So far in 2003, 1.04 million job reductions have
been announced.
