Senate Republicans Raise U.S. Debt Limit, Drawing Attention
To Spending and Risking Seats
By JACKIE CALMES March 17, 2006; Page A4
WASHINGTON -- In a nearly party-line vote, Senate Republicans raised
the U.S. debt limit so the nation can keep on borrowing, putting the
country -- and perhaps their party -- further in the hole.
The $781 billion increase lifts the debt limit to $8.965 trillion --
the equivalent of $30,000 for every American -- enough to cover
borrowing past the November election. But by drawing attention to the
record spending already in place, yesterday's action carries political
costs: Republican leaders fear many conservatives are becoming so
demoralized that they won't vote in the midterm elections, threatening
Republican control of Congress.
(snip)
Democrats were free to vote "no" and they did, just as Republicans did
when they were in the minority. In the Senate's 52-48 vote, all 44
Democrats and Independent Sen. Jim Jeffords of Vermont voted against
lifting the limit; once passage was assured, three Republicans were
free to join them without tipping the result. Two of the three -- Sen.
Burns and Sen. John Ensign of Nevada -- are up for re-election
(snip)

Depends on one's definition of the terms "liberal" and "National
Socialist". Many environmentalists (who are tagged as "liberal", for the
most part) would probably happily support a permanent ban on such things
as ANWR oil drilling, for example -- and that's fairly authoritarian if
one thinks about it in a certain fashion; Nazis were big on authority,
especially against Jews.
Then again, I'd have to look regarding subtle nuances of the terms
"authoritarian" and "fascism".
(I use ANWR as an example, and it's not all that good of one, but it's
well known. The discovery of a new oil field in the Gulf looks far more
promising, although Mexico will reap most of the benefits therefrom. But
it is nice and nearby.)

Thank you for such a fact filled explanation of why the party that
spent 20 years railing against deficits now has record deficits, even
without considering Iraq and Afghanistan.

Gee, that must have really had them Democrats crying in their foo-foo water
bottles.
Imagine, that was probably the first time in history that Democrats ever
voted not to raise debt limits. And just like good little commies, they all
voted alike, like good little Borg.
Next thing, they'll be claiming that just because 80% of the national debt
is due to their profligate habits, that the national debt is really a
Republican creation in just the last few years.
