Eric Alterman has found an effective catharsis.
Bash the right, charge them with "hijacking religion" (I am not
kidding), claim Christianity is a "toxic combination of ignorant
belligerence and whiny self-pity," et seq..., and then do a
philosophical-180 and declare, naively unaware of the looming
hypocrisy, the left should be doing the same thing. To do otherwise, in
Alterman's own, confused words "is not only politically
self-defeating but historically atypical."
It is precisely Alterman's misguided and iniquitous ardor that
establishes the foundations upon which modern socialism-lite is
established. See what your opponents are doing right, bash it,
intellectualize it, and then use it. But, under all circumstances,
never stand upon principle.
God only knows what he meant by "historically atypical."
