By Pablo Rodriguez Carvajal
Havana, September 20, 2005
This Tuesday morning, September 20th as family members went to see them off,
Miguel Sigler Amaya, his wife Josefa Lopez Peña, and their two children,
were all arrested as they were boarding the plane that was to take them into
exile. Isauro Alvarez, activist of the Movement for an Independent
Alternative (MIOA), provided this report from Havana.
As they were boarding a plane that was departing at 8:00 in the morning,
bound for the city of Cancun in Mexico, Miguel Sigler Amaya and his family
were taken to the Police Unit No. 1, located near the Rancho Boyeros Airport
in Havana.
Miguel Sigler Amaya held the position of Public Relations Secretary in the
MIOA when he was arrested on March 18, 2003, and condemned to 26 months in
prison. Amnesty International declared him a prisoner of conscience.
At the same time, his wife, Josefa Lopez Peña participated in the events
carried out by the renowned Ladies In White (family members of Cuban
political prisoners who peacefully and publicly pray and demand the freedom
of their loved ones). Josefa also practiced independent journalism and her
articles were widely published in media web pages such as Payolibre and,
most recently, in Bitacora Cubana, with a section dedicated to her writings.
The Movement for an Independent Alternative makes an urgent appeal to the
international community so that immediate steps are taken in order that
these human rights activists are allowed to leave the island into exile.
