WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)-
New unemployment claims climbed last week as idled workers filed for
unemployment compensation in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
Initial claims for jobless benefits rose by 21,000 to 390,000, after
seasonal adjustments, in the week that ended Oct. 1, the Labor
Department said Thursday.
The four-week average of new claims last week climbed to 404,500 from
388,750.
The number of new jobless claims filed nationwide was bigger than Wall
Street had expected.
The median estimate of 13 economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires
and CNBC was for claims to fall by 6,000 to 350,000 for the week
ending Oct. 1.

"A Labor Department statistician estimated 74,000 of those were related to
Katrina and Rita. He could not say how many were linked to Katrina and how
many to Rita.
The statistician estimated 363,000 unadjusted claims have been filed in
relation to the two storms. "
