DNA test ordered for son of Neil Bush fiancee
Defamation suit prompts request
By RON NISSIMOV
A Houston judge ordered DNA testing Friday to determine whether
President Bush's brother Neil Bush fathered a child with another woman
while he was married to Sharon Bush.
Sharon Bush requested the tests to defend herself against a defamation
lawsuit stemming from the tangled relationship between the Bushes and
another Houston couple, Robert and Maria Andrews.
During the Bushes' contentious divorce, which became final in April,
Sharon Bush testified she heard rumors that her husband had an affair
with Maria Andrews and is the father of her 3-year-old son, Thomas
Alexander Andrews.
The Andrewses ended their 14-year marriage in 2002.
Robert Andrews sued Sharon Bush for defamation in September, saying he
is the boy's father.
Andrews demanded at least $850,000 in damages -- the amount Sharon
Bush paid to buy the Memorial-area home in which she had lived with
Neil Bush.
In November, Sharon Bush asked state District Judge Randy Wilson, who
is presiding over the defamation suit, to order Neil Bush, Robert
Andrews and Thomas Andrews to undergo blood tests to determine
paternity.
If Neil Bush is found to be the father, Robert Andrews would no longer
have a legal basis for his defamation suit.
Neil Bush voluntarily submitted a cheek swab for DNA testing in
November and announced a month later that he and Maria Andrews had
become engaged over chocolates and champagne at a French chateau.
Wilson ordered Friday that Neil Bush's swab be analyzed for a DNA
profile and that Robert and Thomas Andrews also submit swabs for
testing.
Robert Andrews' attorney, Dale Jefferson, said the child will submit a
swab in March and that he is confident it will prove Robert Andrews'
paternity.
Sharon Bush requested similar testing during her divorce case but was
denied because Robert Andrews was not a party to that case.
